San Jose, Costa Rica installs first street signs

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica - San Jose, Costa Rica, unveiled plans on Thursday to install its first street signs, so residents will not have to cite local landmarks like fast-food chains or gas stations when giving directions.

Municipal workers will install about 22,000 signs and plaques on street corners in the city, home to 1.4 million people, where the current informal system is tolerated by residents, but creates headaches for visitors and the post office.

"My current home address is 200 meters north of the Pizza Hut then 400 meters west, but in a few months, I will be able to give a proper street name and a number," San Jose Mayor Johnny Araya said during a ceremony where the first street sign was placed.

Other popular landmarks residents use to describe how to get somewhere include the McDonald's restaurant chain, former President and Nobel Prize-winner Oscar Arias' house, a famous fig tree that has long since died and the site of an old cattle shed turned gas station.

Many streets will be named after illustrious political and intellectual figures from Costa Rican history.

Araya hopes the plan will reduce economic losses caused by undelivered, returned or re-sent mail, estimated at $720 million a year by the Inter-American Development Bank in 2008.

Almost one-quarter of the country's mail never reaches its destination, a spokesman for the Costa Rican post office said.

Postal codes were introduced in 2007 to help matters, but no one uses them because they do not know how to find them.

Costa Rica embarked on a street-naming crusade about 30 years ago, but the signposts were never installed. This time, funding from two different banks made the $1 million project possible.

Once the signage is up, Araya intends to undertake a campaign to encourage use of the new system, which is expected to encounter some resistance.

"I don't think it's going to work", 29-year-old taxi driver Manuel Perez said. "If a tourist tells me to take him to a hotel in whatever street, I'm going to say 'you're speaking to me in Chinese,' because I don't know where that is. I need a landmark."

Minneapolis police probe shooting rampage that killed 5

MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - Minneapolis police on Friday sorted through evidence from a shooting rampage that left at least five people dead, including the founder of a sign company, a UPS driver and the man who opened fire at the business.

The suspected gunman in the Thursday shooting had once worked at Accent Signage Systems Inc and police were not searching for other suspects in the attack, the worst work-place homicide death toll in Minnesota in at least two decades.

Police have not officially released a motive for the attack but were treating it as a work-place shooting.

The suspected gunman apparently died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.

Company founder Reuven Rahamim was among the dead, company spokeswoman Wendy Khabie said on Friday.

UPS driver Keith Basinski also was killed in the shooting, said Jill Schubert, president of UPS's Northern Plains District. A UPS truck was parked at the company's loading dock.

"Keith had been a part of our UPS family for 29 years and we are going to miss him very much," Schubert said on Friday in a statement.

Three men were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting, which was reported at 4:35 p.m. CDT (5.35 p.m. EDT) on Thursday.

A hospital spokeswoman said one man remained in critical condition and a second was in serious condition. The status of the third man, who had been listed in critical condition, was not known.

A fourth person was treated and released.

Accent Signage is the only manufacturing business located among the mix of single-family homes and parks in that tree-lined section of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis.

"In a great neighborhood and a great business, we have a horrible tragedy," Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak said on Thursday night.

Accent Signage is known for a process of making interior signs with durable Braille text lettering. The company website includes a picture of a White House Counsel office sign plate that uses the Braille technology.

Rahamim, an Israeli immigrant, started a sign business out of his basement that grew to have 28 employees and an expected revenue of $5 million to $10 million this year, according to the publication Finance & Commerce.

"Reuven was so proud of everything that he and his family have built in this country, and he had a right to be," Rybak said Friday in a Facebook posting.

The Minneapolis shooting comes a month after a work-related shooting near the Empire State Building in New York, which killed two people and wounded nine.

This followed an July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.

Minnesota work-place homicide records date back only to 1992 and no one incident had resulted in more than two homicides.

Nationally, there were 458 workplace homicides in 2011 and 518 in 2010, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: Help ...

My husband is a Christian man and has been since he was little.? He was brought up in a good home with good moral values.? We have had 13 good years of marriage and the last 2 and half have been really hard after I found out that he had been having a emotional affair with a girl from our church.? My eyes where open that day...I had little jelousy at all and didn't question his faithfulness prior to finding out.?

?

I started noticing things him looking at other girls and when girls would come on the screen of the tv that where really suggestive he didn't turn his head.? Now there are suggestive pictures of women hanging up at his workplace.? He didn't put these things up but other people did.? You would think as a good Christian man that he would try to avoid rooms with these images in them but it seems as though he is going in some of these rooms with the pictures more often now.? What's more is when going to his office he had recorded Man of the house (he tests tv services for his work) which from the description it says "A Texas Ranger must protect a group of cheerleaders who have witnessed a murder."? Well..what do you think you are going to get with that?? I don't know how much of it he had to watch for testing purposes but from the previews it looked to have quite a bit of suggestive material.? I feel he has/is been/being unfaithful to me with his eyes.????

?

Anyway, I'm quite frustrated...I've thought about posting guys all around my house with little on to see how he liked it but I know that wouldn't be the right thing to do.? I've addressed this issue and I've been praying for him and I know things take time but how do I deal with it emotionally until God changes him?? I even got him a book called "Every Man's Battle" for Christmas he says he wants to read it sometime but hasn't bothered to.? He doesn't seem to want to change this.???

?

I feel I am a good wife and I don't withhold myself from him and I try to dress nice so that he will be attracted to me but it still doesn't seem to help.?

?

I would appriciate help knowing how to deal with this.?

?

Thank you,

?

How "Big-Data-as-a-Service" Can Help Smaller Companies Compete

The common perception of how big data is used centers around giant multi-national enterprises spending millions trying to fine tune their business strategies to eke out every last penny from their customers. But in reality, big data is worming its way into businesses large and small, often as a service instead of on-premises software.

The Evolution Of The Comment Card

Visit a bustling diner in a small town and you may see them tucked in among the bottles of ketchup and sugar packets on the linoleum counter: 3 X 5 comment cards. How was your meal? How was your service? Fill it out and tuck it in the little wooden box by the cash register, please.

Regulars might make their concerns known directly to the staff, but diners such as this - like nearly every other business in the world - need to attract and keep new customers in order to grow. That's the point behind comment cards: get as much feedback as you can so you to improve what needs fixing and keep doing what's working well.

Moving the comment card into the 21st Century is essentially what big data is all about.

The most common form of big data in busines today was created as a technological response to tracking all of the data that was generated by commercial websites. Once marketers and other business execs saw that they could monitor an online customer's responses all the way down to the mouse click, software engineers started figuring out a way to keep that data and mine it for ever more useful information.

The combination of speed and volume needed to catch all of this information is what makes big data tools and technology really necessary. But for the vast majority of businesses that do not have big ecommerce sites, is big data even worth the attempt?

It turns out, yes.

Big Data Tools Work For Small Data, Too

One of the easier ways smaller businesses are taking on big data is seeing the general value of data analytics no matter how big or small the data set is. That message is practically a non-brainer: business owners are scanning the headlines every day and getting excited about applying data to their decision-making process.

Social media is one quick way to implement big data within a smaller business. Used and analyzed properly, the information from social media can give any business instant feedback that's far more robust and immediate than those old-fashioned comment cards.

"Every time we perform a search, tweet, send an email, post a blog, comment on one, use a cell phone, shop online, update our profile on a social networking site, use a credit card, or even go to the gym, we leave behind a mountain of data, a digital footprint, that provides a treasure trove of information about our lifestyles, financial activities, health habits, social interactions, and much more," wrote former Tivoli CEO Frank Moss in his 2011 book The Sorcerers and Their Apprentices.

Big-Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS)

Using big data can go beyond mining social media as a juiced-up form of the comment card. Big data can also be integrated with existing business practices to improve and expand day-to-day operations.

It's becoming pretty well-known that big data and fast data analysis are being used by large hotels and chains to improve their yield management processes. This kind of infrastructure is typically beyond the reach of smaller hotels, inns and bed and breakfasts. It's probably overkill anyway: while a big hotel near Orlando, Fla., area might see 75 room pricing changes per day, a small independent lodging in a less-volatile market might only see a couple of price moves daily.

But that doesn't make the need for a smaller inn to adjust to local market changes any less important, says Erik Hovanec, CEO of LeisureLink, which specializes in providing yield-management as a service to smaller hospitality locations.

One of LeisureLink's clients is a 120-room property outside Myrtle Beach, SC, that "is great at hospitality, not necessarily at IT." Hovanec described. Using his company's service, the property is able to tap into information about local Myrtle Beach hotels and see real-time pricing information on other properties and make adjustments accordingly.

This is exactly what the larger hotels and chains have been doing for a while. But now this service is available to smaller, mid-market establishments. Typically, a large hotel or chain might invest $30-$40 million just to increase their yield management from 90% to 95%. Hovanec boasts that since LeisureLink's service is often the first real step into automated yield management for smaller hotels, their efficiency in yield management can rocket from 20% to 80%.

Can Big Data Work For Every Business?

At some point, any company considering a big-data approach needs to consider the one basic question: is there information out there that will help improve the business? If there's a yes in there, then a search for a big data solution might be worth the effort.

It's not that we really need another another "as-a-Service" acronym, but thanks to the use of Internet-based Big-Data-as-a-Service (BDaaS), you don't have to be a giant enteprise to play any more. These days, there's a good chance that someone out there will have the information you need or can help you find it.

Zombees: First 'zombie' bees found in Washington state

The infection is another threat to?bees?that are needed to pollinate crops.

By Associated Press / September 24, 2012

Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper in Kent, holds up a plastic bag with a dead zombie bee and pupae ? two at each end of the bag, Sept. 22. Hohn found that his bees are infected with a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

The infection is as grim as it sounds: "Zombie?bees" have a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

And experts say the condition has crept into Washington state.

"I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," said Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper who spotted the infected insects at his suburban Seattle home.

Hohn returned from vacation a few weeks ago to find many of his?bees?either dead or flying in jerky patterns and then flopping on the floor.

He remembered hearing about zombie?bees, so he collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, the Kent man had evidence his?bees?were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies.

"Curiosity got the better of me," Hohn said.

The zombie?bees?were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported.

San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik first discovered zombie?bees?in California in 2008.

Hafernik now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists like Hohn to track the infection across the country. Observers also have found zombie?bees?in Oregon and South Dakota.

The infection is another threat to?bees?that are needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey?bees?in a colony suddenly die.

The life cycle of the fly that infects zombie?bees?is reminiscent of the movie "Alien," the newspaper reported. A small adult female lands on the back of a honeybee and injects eggs into the?bee's?abdomen. The eggs hatch into maggots.

"They basically eat the insides out of the?bee," Hafernik said.

After consuming their host, the maggots pupate, forming a hard outer shell that looks like a fat, brown grain of rice. That's what Hohn found in the plastic bag with the dead?bees. Adult flies emerge in three to four weeks.

There's no evidence yet that the parasitic fly is a major player in the?bees' decline, but it does seem the pest is targeting new hosts, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University.

"It may occur a lot more widely than we think," he said.

That's what Hafernik hopes to find out with his website, zombeewatch.org. The site offers simple instructions for collecting suspect?bees, watching for signs of parasites and reporting the results.

Once more people start looking, the number of sightings will probably climb, Hohn said.

Sew Beautiful Blog: A closer look at Stitch Craft Create!

Magazine Week!

This week we delve into the world of magazines, including Stitch Craft Create, Sew Beautiful, and Stitch.

Today we will highlight

Stitch Craft Create is a refreshing magazine devoted to celebrating a creative lifestyle. Through inspiration, motivation, crafting ideas and how-to projects, Stitch Craft Create offers a ?can-do? approach to developing creative ambition and handmade originality. Within the pages of this contemporary crafts publication, readers have the opportunity to meet inspiring people, both hobbyists to celebrity designers; learn crafting techniques and receive an abundance of unique project tutorials in a variety of crafting genres, including sewing, paper crafts, fibers, mixed media, repurposing ideas, entertaining and more; discover new must-have products and resources; and above all, ignite the creative passion within themselves! We all wish we had the ability to beautify our lives with creative touches; Stitch Craft Create inspires the creative process and promotes living a handmade life by teaching readers how to seek, find and express creativity.

We had a chance to sit down with Shannon Miller, editor for Stitch Craft Create. ?

Sew Beautiful: ?Where did your love of crafting come from and have you crafted all of your life?

Shannon Miller: ?I have been a crafter for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my parents were always incredibly encouraging of creative play, and there was never a shortage of art supplies, crayons or glue at our house. My fondest childhood memories are of "making things" to play with or give to others. Just the other day, my sister and I were digging through our old dollhouse furniture, and there was a scrappy decoupaged box I clearly remember making, along with wonky furniture I'd crafted from floral foam and fabric scraps (not my finest work, but wonderful memories!)?As I grew up, crafting and creativity remained a central part of my identity. My parents gave me my first sewing machine when I went off to college, and today most of what I make is still for our home or family. I strongly considered attending a graduate school for art therapy because of my deeply-held belief that creating things with your own two hands is one of the finest forms of stress relief; and my husband knows that one of the best things he can offer me when I'm feeling anxious is a couple of hours alone in my craft room!

SB:?What is the most rewarding part of your job as the editor of Stitch Craft Create magazine?

SM: Knowing that the product we create is how people choose spend their extra cash and leisure time is an intrinsic reward like no other. Craft time is my happy place, and being part of a company that helps foster the creative spirit and enjoyment of others is so endlessly fun for me. You know that feeling when you meet a new person and discover that you're both "into crafts," causing you to squeal with excitement at your newfound shared interest? That's how I feel every day, and I feel like our readers are my best friends for that very reason!

SB:?What is the hardest part or most challenging part of your job?

SM: Trying (and failing) to make everybody happy all the time can be very intimidating, and it makes me very sad any time I find out that someone is disappointed, no matter what the reason. And of course, the deadlines are relentless! But all we can do is our best, and keep trying to make that best even better. I'm blessed to work with a team that is so very passionate about what we do.?Creating each issue of SCC has been a real learning process, and we're so excited about what's to come in the future.

SB:?Since you work with a multicraft publication, can you tell us which medium is your favorite?

SM: Oh my, I love it ALL! How can I choose just one? Personally, I'm a hand embroidery junkie. I also love quilting, although I always tend to bite off more than I can chew when it comes to quilts, so small sewing projects are often my craft of choice. I love sewing for my children and for our house, and I'm getting into clothing as well. I also have a soft spot for any project that crosses mediums, like stitching on paper, or ribbons and buttons on a scrapbook page, and any kind of repurposing/upcycling projects. Events and entertaining are another place I tend to dump lots of ideas; I love getting to make everything coordinate (I get a little obsessive!) Although, the parties I help decorate or host tend to always be a last-minute production, so they're always more incredible in my head than in real life. ;)

SB:?Since you just had a baby recently and are now the mother of two very little ones, does your job and home responsibilities allow for any personal craft time? How do you get your "craft fix?"

SM: Two babies under 18 months old has certainly put a cramp in my "free time," but things are settling down now that the newborn is not so new. I can usually grab a few minutes to myself on the weekends or after bedtime. I've gotten into scrapbooking this year, because I love that I can buy and play with all the scrumptious products and tidbits to my heart's desire, yet whip out a complete page in one sitting if I want. It's great stress relief; I like that it allows me to embrace that Instagram-esque concept of capturing a moment and savoring a memory of even small things. And of course, I'm incredibly lucky to work in and around crafts at work, so that certainly helps fill the creative gap when I don't have time for myself at home.

Thank you to Shannon for taking time from her very busy days to allow us to get to know her a little better; the brains behind the creativity!

Bank Of Japan Did Not Impress Markets.

The event of last week was the policy meeting of the Bank of Japan. Expectations were low, meaning most analysts had predicted no action from the BoJ. Causing initial surprise, the central bank announced expansion of its asset purchase program by JPY 10 trillion to JPY 55 trillion. In response, all the Yen pairs rallied, but that lasted only few hours as if markets digested the news and lost enthusiasm. After all, bigger purse does not guarantee more QE, at least not immediately. According to the release, the target for asset purchases for 2012 remains unchanged at JPY 45 trillion, while the objective for mid-2013 increased by JPY 5 trillion. To date quantitative easing by Japanese authorities did very little to weaken the Yen, especially versus the USD. Based on what happened last week, if the BoJ wants achieve measurable results, it will have to become as aggressive as the FED when it comes to money printing. Alternatively, a new round of direct interventions is another option, too.

Actions of the BoJ had some influence on my trade from last post, the short in CAD-JPY, although without changing its outcome. A brief weakness in the Yen created an uncomfortable bounce, but that was short lived. The price resumed its downward trajectory, falling to 79.57, easily meeting my target of 80.00. I am considering another sell under the new low and will make the decision in coming days. If it happens, the objective would be comparable to the previous trade, about 75 pips or so.

Another possible trade covered in the previous post did not work out. More to the point, it did not happen. I was looking for a trend reversal on the hourly chart of the AUD-NZD, with intention of buying it at 1.2745. The price kept falling, establishing a minor high at 1.2695, which could become a new long entry (or few pips above it, like 1.2705). In simpler terms, I am tracking minor highs with buy orders, still waiting for a reversal/rebound. The next one could form at around 1.2650, allowing for lower entry, but that is speculative for now.

The Euro pulled back to some degree, although it is not clear if this is a genuine reversal or a corrective move, typical following a strong rally. In case of the EUR-CAD that translated into a decline from 1.2798 to 1.2633. At this point, the hourly chart appears to be undecided. While it could form a bottom here, I am inclined to think the EUR-CAD will move lower. With a sell order at 1.2628, immediate target is around 1.2550. Meanwhile opening gaps could bring some short-term trading opportunities, if they develop. We will find out soon. Have a great trading week!

RIM suffers outage on iPhone 5 day

Research In Motion said it had restored service to millions of BlackBerry users affected by a three-hour service outage in Europe and Africa on Friday, embarrassing the company on the same day Apple?launched its new iPhone.

The disruption echoed a much larger failure that took down BlackBerry service for much of the world last October, and boded poorly for the struggling smartphone maker's turnaround plans.

"That RIM has experienced another outage is worrisome - something hasn't been put right," said John Jackson, a wireless analyst at CCS Insight.

RIM shares fell more than 6 percent and threatened to breach their lowest point since 2003 less than a week before a quarterly financial report widely expected to show a loss.

Jackson said it was "a bitterly ironic coincidence" that the failure occurred on the same day Apple started selling the iPhone 5 to throngs of fans worldwide who had largely brushed off complaints about a new map feature.

"Maybe it's a recipe for conspiracy theories," he said.

RIM's chief executive, Thorsten Heins, later issued an apology to BlackBerry users who were affected. He said as much as 6 percent of its customer base - or nearly 5 million users - may have experienced email delays of as long as three hours.

"We are conducting a full technical analysis of this quality of service issue and will report as soon as it concludes," Heins said in the emailed statement. "I again want to apologise to those customers who were impacted today."

RIM made similar promises but has yet to provide a complete picture of what caused last year's four-day outage that left tens of millions of frustrated BlackBerry users on five continents without email, instant messaging and browsing. The disruption coincided with the launch of the iPhone 4S, Apple's predecessor to the iPhone 5.

That fault occurred in a facility in England. It initially affected Europe and surrounding regions before spreading to North and South America. It took days for RIM's chiefs to apologise over the problems and the company's handling of the issue was heavily criticised.

"This is an opportunity to demonstrate that RIM has learnt lessons from last year. If it is handled poorly again, it could see a faster erosion of its installed base," said Canalys analyst Pete Cunningham, speaking before Heins' apology.

Cunningham acknowledged that the impact of the current problem, which lasted just a few hours, would likely be minimal.

RIM, with more than 78 million subscribers, has watched its customer base grow much more slowly as the iPhone and a slew of devices that run on Google's Android operating system become more popular. BlackBerry's market share, meanwhile, has shrivelled along with RIM's share price.

The outage comes during a transitional period for RIM, which is preparing to launch a next-generation BlackBerry lineup with a new operating system that the company hopes will help it regain its stride. Those phones are now due for release early next year, after being delayed twice.

"This outage could not happen at a worst quarter ... when all devices are coming out and the Christmas season is approaching. They are close to their last chance, if they miss it, they will not recover," said IDC analyst Francisco Jeronimo.

Over the past year, RIM has suffered several smaller failures to its delivery system, which - unlike rival handsets that rely solely on carrier networks - encrypts and compresses messages.

That was once hailed as a major advantage. The BlackBerry once dominated the corporate market because companies believed RIM was best at protecting enterprise data and prevent the theft of corporate secrets.

But the outages highlight RIM's Achilles heel: BlackBerry messages are routed through its own data centers. That means information is more secure, but it also creates a single point for potential failure.

Messages sent through phones from Apple and other vendors do not travel through any central network, so they do not have that same weakness.

RIM's BlackBerry 10 line will not rely as heavily on RIM's proprietary network, but that is unlikely to be a primary consideration for consumers.

"The problem is it needs to offer something a step-change better and that's becoming quite difficult in the smartphone market," said James Cordwell, an analyst at Atlantic Equities.

Romney pulls in big bucks in southern California

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Having declared that his presidential campaign does not need a makeover, Republican Mitt Romney raised millions of dollars at two fundraisers in southern California on Saturday to help bankroll the final weeks of the race.

"I'm not even going to be able to go home today. We're just coming to town to see you and keep the campaign going," Romney told a well-heeled crowd at the Grand Del Mar Resort hotel in Del Mar, California, about 12 miles from his beachfront house in La Jolla.

Some 650 supporters - including diet guru Jenny Craig - paid from $1,000 to $25,000 a head to hear Romney's 40-minute speech in Del Mar, have their photograph taken with the candidate and eat roast chicken breast served on a bed of Israeli couscous.

Spencer Zwick, the campaign's national finance chairman, assured donors their money would be spent wisely: to build a "massive ground game across the country in those swing states" and buy more television advertising.

The second Saturday event, at the Beverly Hilton, pulled in $6 million, Romney said at the start of his remarks.

About 1,500 tickets were sold at three tiers: $1,000, $15,000 and $50,000. Guests were entertained by comedian Dennis Miller and songwriter/producer David Foster.

With his standing in the polls slipping, Romney has been under fire from some in his party who feel he has not spent enough time visiting political swing states versus hob-nobbing with wealthy donors.

President Barack Obama spent the day campaigning - and also raising funds - in Wisconsin, a battleground state and the home of Romney's running mate, Representative Paul Ryan.

Romney had no public events on Saturday. He will fly to Denver on Sunday afternoon for a rally and among other stops will have a two-day bus tour in Ohio Tuesday and Wednesday.

Local resident Matt Romney, the second of the candidate's five sons, introduced his father and urged attendees to "open their wallets" at least one more time to help get the Republican's message out before November 6.

"It's our turn, you guys" said the elder Romney, 65, who was wearing dress pants and a sport jacket.

'DOESN'T NEED A TURNAROUND'

Boarding a plane in San Francisco on Saturday, Romney declined to answer a reporter's shouted question of whether he will soon adopt a more "aggressive" strategy.

But he told the crowd in Del Mar Saturday's event was his "last fundraiser in San Diego."

In an interview to be broadcast on Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Romney rejected calls for changes, pointing out that in national polls he is in a tight race with Obama.

"It doesn't need a turnaround. We've got a campaign which is tied with an incumbent president to the United States," Romney said in excerpts from the interview released by CBS on Friday.

At the Del Mar event, Romney lauded some local California entrepreneurs, including Ada Regan, owner of "Strawberry Hill," an historic mansion in Hillsborough, near San Francisco, where Romney raised funds on Friday night.

Regan's late husband Barrie, an electrical engineer and Italian immigrant, designed components that were used in the U.S. space program.

Pressing a familiar theme, Romney said Obama does not understand what it takes to build a business but rather wants government to play a larger top-down role.

"They DID build their business," Romney said of the Regans.

In Los Angeles Romney criticized Obama's support for certain union measures and said the key to improving education in the United States was "to put the kids and the parents and the teachers first, and the unions and their interests behind."

Is Da'Rick Rogers About To Set An (FCS) Receiving Yards Record? [UPDATE: No] [College Football]

Is Da'Rick Rogers About To Set An (FCS) Receiving Yards Record? [UPDATE: No] Da'Rick Rogers has hit a couple pot holes in his college football career: he committed to Georgia, but went back on that commitment and drew the wrath of the Bulldog fan base. He ended up at rival Tennessee, where he was the "plum of the recruiting class" and also charged with "disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in connection with a brawl that left an off-duty police officer unconscious and bloodied in the street." Some funny pictures of Da'Rick popped up on various disreputable websites where it looked like a girl might have been biting him, and in which he was undoubtedly drinking some off-brand Mike's Hard Lemonade.

This summer the all-SEC Rogers was suspended "after multiple violations of the school's substance-abuse policy for athletes." He transfered to Tennessee Tech (which plays in Cookeville), and thus, the trolling you see above from pugnacious UT fans. Now you're all caught up.

Tonight, Da'Rick, playing in a league that's objectively beneath his skill level, is dominating:

A bit later:

Tennessee Tech is Ohio Valley Conference team, meaning they're in the FCS (formerly known at Division I-AA). The FCS record for receptions is 24 (Jerry Rice is one of two to have reached that mark, at Mississipi Valley State in 1983). The FCS record for receiving yards is 376.

Yep! We'll keep you updated. Oh, and UT is tied with Akron at the half.

UPDATE (9:37): You can watch. It's close, in the fourth.

UPDATE (9:53): Overtime! But did we jinx Da'Rick? The extremely pro-Southeast Missouri announcers on this feed say he looks "tired." Stats forthcoming.

UPDATE (10:03): Double overtime! The teams exchanged TDs. What have I gotten myself into? This feed is about 20 seconds behind its audio. Da'Rick Rogers hasn't had a catch since I started watching. Now I see what UT fans were talking about.

UPDATE (10:10): Yeah, no. Game over, missed FG from Tennessee Tech to give the Red Hawks the victory, 41-38. Tech used Da'Rick as a decoy towards the end, and thus lost. Force it in if you have to! He had ten billion yards receiving in the first half! Jesus. I'll throw in an updated stat line if I ever find one.

UPDATE (10:22): 18 receptions for 303 yards, 2 TDs. I don't like to armchair analyze, but if you don't target Da'Rick Rogers on every play, you lose by a field goal in overtime. Another lesson learned. Pic via.
