Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" arrives in June; Sundance darling "The Spectacular Now" set for August

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - A24 will release Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring" June 14 and James Ponsoldt's Sundance hit is set for "The Spectacular Now" August 2, the independent distributor announced on Thursday.

A24 acquired both projects in January - "The Bling Ring" on the eve of Sundance and "Spectacular" after it screened well at the Utah-based festival.

Coppola's film stars Emma Watson as one member of a group of real-life kids who tracked celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes. They stole more than $3 million of goods from the likes of Paris Hilton.

Coppola wrote and directed the film based on Nancy Jo Sales' Vanity Fair article, "The Suspects Wore Louboutins."

Ponsoldt's film stars Miles Teller as Sutter, a high-school senior who refuses to think about his future as those around him begin to plan for college and the next phase of their lives. After breaking up with his girlfriend, he meets Aimee (Shailene Woodley), a sweet, hard-working girl whose life contrasts with his own more hedonistic approach.

"(500) Days of Summer's" Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber wrote the script.

A24 launched publicly last August and just released its first movie, Roman Coppola's "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III." It will open two more in March, "Ginger & Rosa" and "Spring Breakers," before turning to these two summer titles.

Balloon crash in Egypt's Luxor kills 19 tourists

LUXOR, Egypt (AP) ? A hot air balloon carrying tourists over Egypt's ancient city of Luxor caught fire Tuesday, and some passengers trying to escape the flames leaped to their deaths before the craft crashed in a sugar cane field. At least 19 tourists were killed in one of the world's deadliest ballooning accidents.

The accident was a new blow to Egypt's tourism industry, which has been gutted by the country's turmoil the past two years. The southern city of Luxor, site of some of the most dramatic pharaonic temples, has been particularly hard hit, with empty hotels worsening the area's poverty.

After the early morning crash, authorities suspended hot air balloon flights, a popular tourist attraction here, while investigators worked to determine the cause. The crash raised accusations that authorities have let safety standards fall amid the political instability since the 2011 fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak ? though the civil aviation chief insisted his ministry keeps stringent inspections of balloons.

The balloon was carrying 20 tourists ? from France, Britain, Belgium, Hungary, Japan and Hong Kong ? and an Egyptian pilot on a sunrise flight over Luxor, officials said.

According to initial indications, it was in the process of landing after 7 a.m. when a landing cable got caught around a helium tube and a fire erupted, according to an investigator with the state prosecutor's office.

The balloon then shot up in the air, the investigator said. The fire set off an explosion of a gas canister and the balloon plunged some 300 meters (1,000 feet) to the ground, according to an Egyptian security official. It crashed in a sugar cane field outside al-Dhabaa village just west of Luxor, 510 kilometers (320 miles) south of Cairo, the official said.

The official and the investigator spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

"I saw tourists catching fire and they were jumping from the balloon. They were trying to flee the fire but it was on their bodies," said Hassan Abdel-Rasoul, a farmer in al-Dhabaa. He said one of those he saw on fire was a visibly pregnant woman.

Bodies of the dead tourists were scattered across the field around the remnants of the balloon, as rescue officials collected the remains in body bags.

The crash immediately killed 18, according to Luxor's governor, Ezzat Saad. Two Britons and the Egyptian pilot were taken to the hospital, but one of the Britons died of his injuries soon after. The other Briton and the Egyptian, who state media said suffered severe burns, were flown to Cairo for further treatment.

Among the dead were nine tourists from Hong Kong, four Japanese ? including a couple in their 60s ? and two other Britons, according to Egyptian officials or tourism authorities from the home countries.

Hot air ballooning is a popular pastime for tourists in Luxor, usually at sunrise to give a dramatic view over the pharaonic temples of Karnak and Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, a desert valley where many pharaohs, notably King Tutankhamun, were buried.

Luxor has seen crashes in the past. In 2009, 16 tourists were injured when their balloon struck a cellphone transmission tower. A year earlier, seven tourists were injured in a similar crash.

The toll puts the crash among the deadliest involving a recreational hot air balloon. In 1989, 13 people were killed when their hot air balloon collided with another over the Australian outback near the town of Alice Springs.

After the 2009 accident, Egypt suspended hot air balloon flights for several months and tightened safety standards. Pilots were given more training and a landing spot was designated for the balloons.

But Tuesday's crash raised accusations that standards had fallen, and many in Luxor were afraid it would only further damage tourism in a city that relies on foreign visitors.

"Tourism is dying here already and the tourists killed in the balloon will make things worse," said Mohammed Osman, head of the Luxor's Tourism Chamber. He blamed civil aviation authorities, who are in charge of licensing and inspecting balloons, accusing them of negligence

"There is no oversight, and no one is checking anything. I don't want to blame the revolution for everything but the laxness started with the revolution," he said. "These people are not doing their job, they are not checking the balloons and they just issue the licenses without inspection."

Civil Aviation Minister Wael el-Maadawi, who flew to Luxor to oversee the investigation, said the balloon that crashed had been inspected earlier this month as a requirement for renewing the company's license. Speaking to Al-Jazeera Mubasher television, he said safety standards were "normally high" and that there must have been extreme circumstances that led to the crash.

"This is a painful accident," he said. "It is premature to say whether it is maintenance or a human error until the investigation is over, whether the tube was unhooked because of a maintenance error or because it was pulled, someone stepped on it and pulled it."

The Civil Aviation Ministry, like much of Egypt's administration, has seen some political disputes since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi came to power in June as Egypt's first freely elected leader.

The ministry was long dominated by military officers or former officers, some of whom have resented control by a civilian president, particularly one who hails from the Muslim Brotherhood. In other ministries, observers say Brotherhood members have been appointed, or included as volunteers, in many posts.

One civil aviation ministry official told The Associated Press that standards have fallen since civilians were brought in to some middle-ranking positions. The official said inspections have become more lax, taking place oncee a month instead of weekly. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to speak on the issue.

Egypt's tourism industry has been decimated since the 2011 uprising and the political turmoil that followed and continues to this day. Luxor's hotels are currently about 25 percent full in what is supposed to be the peak of the winter season.

Scared off by the turmoil and tenuous security following the uprising, the number of tourists coming to Egypt fell to 9.8 million in 2011 from 14.7 million the year before, and revenues plunged 30 percent to $8.8 billion.

Poverty swelled at the country's fastest rate in Luxor. In 2011, 39 percent of its population lived on less than $1 a day, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to government figures.

Magda Fawzi, whose company operates four luxury Nile River cruise boats to Luxor, said she expects the accident will lead to tourist cancellations. Tour guide Hadi Salama said he expects Tuesday's accident to hurt the eight hot air balloon companies operating in Luxor, but that it may not directly affect tourism to the Nile Valley city.

In August, Morsi flew to Luxor to encourage tourism there, about a month after he took office and vowed that Egypt was safe for tourists.

"Egypt is safer than before, and is open for all," he said in remarks carried by the official MENA news agency at the time. He was referring to the security situation following the 2011 ouster of autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak.

Deadly accidents caused by poor management and a decrepit infrastructure have taken place since Morsi took office. In January, 19 Egyptian conscripts died when their rickety train jumped the track. In November, 49 kindergarteners were killed when their school bus crashed into a speeding train because the railway guard failed to close the crossing.

The Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political force and Morsi's base of support, blames accidents on a culture of negligence fostered by Mubarak, under whose rule the country saw a number of devastating accidents.

Inbound Marketing Campaign Requires Patience | Internet ...

Inbound marketing is all the rage at the moment. It is the notion that you get customers to come to you, rather than you go out and find them. That has been a ?holy grail? for business for decades. Indeed, one of my favourite books is ?Getting Business To Come To You? which was published before much of this Internet malarkey had been invented. Wouldn?t it be marvellous if people just discovered your business, that you did not have to go out and promote yourself?

Just think of it ? no more cold calls, no more trudging round door-to-door, no more dreary networking meetings, no more stale exhibition halls. Instead, you just sit at your desk and the phone rings and the online cash register keeps on going ?ka-ching?.? It sounds a dream world, yet many online businesses are discovering that you can certainly reduce your marketing efforts if you use ?inbound marketing?, which means people come to you because they already know about you. But how?

The answer to inbound marketing is simply adding content to your web presence. The more web content you add, the more frequently you do it, then the greater the chances of people stumbling across your stuff as they wander the web. But each time I talk to businesses about that they say ?tried that, but it doesn?t really work?.

Yet, I can show them examples of businesses who have turned their marketing department into an online publishing business and who have seen significant growth as a result. I can give them links? to business blogs in tiny niche areas which have become the principal source of new business leads for those firms. Even so, business leaders still say to me ?tried it, but it didn?t work for us?.

However, new research from the folks at HubSpot now reveals why businesses think like that. The study involved over 5,000 companies who use the Internet to market their products and services, so it is substantial information. The research also includes input from over 250 business marketing experts, so the data is significant. And this is what it tells us:

Inbound Marketing Takes Six Months To Work

That?s right ? you are not going to start to see the benefits from any inbound marketing activity for around six months. True, the study did show that 17% of companies did get more traffic to their website in a few weeks, but for 68% of firms it was 7 months before anything happened. That?s over 200 days of relentless, continual adding content before most firms see anything happen in terms of additional interest in their online business.

Inbound Marketing Delays

Few business leaders want to wait that long. They are fuelled with the ?instant? online world we live in and expect to see additional traffic and new lead generation within weeks, if not days. They want to see a return on their investment in content production far sooner than the back end of the year.

The reason why so many businesses are saying ?we tried that, but it didn?t work? is because they are giving up too soon.

To be fair to HubSpot, they have always said that inbound marketing is a ?slow burn? ? indeed, they say they are surprised by the data, because it does show that some people do indeed get a rapid benefit from inbound marketing. The company has always preached patience.

So, what do you need to do in order to get business to come to you online?

Firstly, as the HubSpot research shows, the biggest benefit comes from blogging. And the companies who receive the most benefit blog EVERY DAY or MORE. So get your scribbling pens out?!

Secondly, the research confirms that you need regular ?calls to action? in order to benefit from inbound marketing.

So, if you don?t know how to organise them, please contact me?! Oh whoops ? there?s a call to action for you?!

But whatever you do ? be patient?! As this study shows, for the vast majority of people to benefit from inbound marketing it takes six or seven months. Inbound marketing is NOT a quick fix. But it certainly does lead business to come to you.

Edmonds Military Wire: Baby Boomers cause generational stress ...

Edmonds Military Wire: Baby Boomers cause generational stress

Mike SchindlerBy Michael Schindler

According to Stress in America, a study commissioned by the American Psychological Association, Millennials are the most stressed demographic. This not only impacts our military and Veteran populations, but every community across America ? yes, even Edmonds. Real change is required.

The study goes on to state, ?While Millennials (ages 18 to 33) and Gen Xers (ages 34 to 47) report the highest average stress levels, Boomers (48 to 66) and Matures (67 years and older) join them in reporting levels that are higher than they consider healthy. Stress has also increased for a considerable number of Americans, regardless of age.?

And guess who is responsible? The Baby Boomers. Yep, I said it. I called out the white elephant. Now before I get lynched, let me explain.

It?s all about the money ? or lack thereof ? and the Boomers are responsible for teaching and implementing the ?I?ve got mine and we?ll figure out how to get yours later? attitude. Surveys show that money tops the list of stress sources (76 percent of respondents identified it as a problem), followed by work (70 percent) and the economy (65 percent).

Under Boomer leadership, whether at home or in government, Gen Xers were the first generation to be left ?worse off? than the previous generation ? and the cycle continues.

And kids feel their parents? stress. According to Sue Shellenbarger with The Wall Street Journal, ?Most parents ? 69 percent ? say that their stress doesn?t affect their children. But the kids disagree: 91 percent of 8- to 17-year-olds said they can tell when their parents are stressed out, and many ?feel sad, worried, and frustrated as a result.??

Arianna Huffington (I?m working on being fair and balanced) even chimed in and stated, ?It?s reasonable to assume that higher levels of stress put the Millennials at higher risk for all sorts of destructive downstream consequences, from diabetes and obesity to anxiety and depression. Not surprisingly, work is one of the biggest causes of stress. The job numbers are grim, and even those lucky Millennials that land a decent job often face a workplace rife with destructive definitions of success.?

And then there is Sequestration. Those impacts are not going to be pretty. Take Fort Drum ? WWNY News reported that thousands of civilians will likely experience furlough ? I can tell you that Fort Drum?s training budget is 25% less than it was the month before, some brigades will deploy without a training rotation (not good ? this is when body bags fill up) and the installation could see a military force reduction of up to 8000 troops?and this won?t be unique to Fort Drum.

So, aside from assigning blame, which doesn?t solve anything and just creates a good headline and a defensive environment (forgive me Baby Boomers), what are we to do?

We need to think outside the box.

Some have taken that to new levels like committing a crime?because at least they?ll be able to collect unemployment.

I?m not suggesting we follow or encourage that channel of thought.

What I?m suggesting is that we first understand that ?business as usual? has gotten us to where we are today and we need to change. That is step one.

Step two?and Bottom line: we need to truly understand what the economic drivers are for our city and what future ones we need to embrace. We need to attract new business and talent into our city that will support the economic drivers. We need to reshape programs and policies so that we see an ROI ? and we need to engage the next generation?new thought leaders?and encourage input.

We have incredible leaders cycling out of our military ? many are proven, disciplined, understand hard work, have little regard for politics but understandcompleting a mission successfully, and know that team work is vital. What are you doing to attract this talent to your business, church, organization?or city?

Michael Schindler, Navy veteran, and president of Edmonds-based Operation Military Family, is a guest writer for several national publications, author of the book ?Operation Military Family? and ?The Military Wire? blog. He is also a popular keynote and workshop speaker who reaches thousands of service members and their families every year through workshops and seminars that include? ?How to Battle-Ready Your Relationship? or ?What Your Mother-in-Law Didn?t Tell You.?? He received the 2010 Outstanding Patriotic Service Award from the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs.

Pearson CEO says Financial Times is not for sale

LONDON (Reuters) - The new chief executive of British education and media group Pearson said the Financial Times (FT) is not for sale, refuting repeated media speculation about the newspaper's future at the company.

"The FT is a valued and valuable part of Pearson. I have said the business is not for sale, nor have we initiated, conducted, encouraged in any shape or form, any sort of process whatsoever, nor have I had any conversations with anybody about the sale of the FT," Chief executive John Fallon said when asked about the newspaper on a call with reporters on Monday.

The company said earlier it expects this year's earnings to be flat on 2012 and it will start a 150 million pound restructuring plan.

(AP) ? The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is encouraging celebrities to tweet during the Oscars.

The film organization has expanded its digital outreach for the 85th Academy Awards with a new feature that lets stars to snap photos of themselves backstage during Sunday's ceremony and instantly post them online.

What Twitter calls a "Magic Mirror" will take photo-booth-style pictures of participating stars in the green room and send them out on the academy's official Twitter account. Organizers expect multiple celebrity mash-ups.

The backstage green room is a private place for stars to hang out before taking the stage and is typically closed to press and photographers.

The Magic Mirror is "giving access to fans at home a part of the show they never got to experience before," Twitter spokeswoman Elaine Filadelfo said Friday.

A new video-on-demand/instant replay feature also being introduced Sunday will allow Oscar fans to view show highlights online moments after they happen and share them with friends on Twitter and Facebook. Dozens of clips from the red carpet and the awards telecast will be available on the official Oscar website beyond Sunday's ceremony.

Oscar.com also offers other behind-the-scenes interactive features, including various backstage camera perspectives and a new live blog that aggregates the show's presence across social media. It will track the traffic on whatever makes a splash, like Angelina Jolie's right leg did last year.

The academy wants to make its second-screen experience just as rich as its primary one.

"Social media is now mainstream," said Christina Kounelias, chief marketing officer for the academy.

"We're not doing social media to reach out to young kids," said the academy's digital media director, Josh Spector. "We're doing it to connect with all Oscar fans."

The Midwest Is One Big Snowy Wreck Right Now

It's snow season in America, and although the East Coast has been hogging all the weather-attention this year, the Midwest put Blizzard Nemo to shame on Thursday. It's not so much that the storm system moving through the central United States dumped more snow on the ground. This week's storm simply dumped snow on more ground, affecting 20 states over the course of an hour. CNN put the scope of the storm in startling terms, "About 60 million people -- 20% of the U.S. population -- were under winter weather warnings, watches and advisories in the 750,000 square miles affected." And yes, there was thundersnow. It even snowed in the middle of the Arizona desert.

RELATED: The Best Ways to Track the Big Blizzard

The real challenge of this week's Midwest wallop is that many of the states affected, like Missouri ?and Kansas, aren't accustomed to getting big snow storms. A month ago it was in the 70s in Kansas City. Nowhere was hit harder than the highways, where the snow accumulated so quickly that the cars couldn't get to safety quick enough. This left cars sliding into snow drifts and?trucks jackknifed and helpless on the highway. Kansas actually closed a 240-mile stretch of the Interstate and dispatched two dozen National Guard soldiers to search for travelers stranded in the mayhem. "If you don't have to travel, don't do it," said the state's governor, Sam Brownback. He reiterated, "If you don't have to get out, just really, please, don't do it." Nevertheless at least two deaths attributed to storm has been reported, both from car accidents.

RELATED: The Supermarket Apocalypse Is Upon Us

The good news is that snow is precipitation, which the plains states desperately need. The region's been struggling with droughts for what seems like years now ? global warming, ahem ? and several inches of snow melt amounts to some much appreciated respite. "We can get excited about it," one farmer told The New York Times. "But we're going to have to have more moisture, however it comes."

Report: Josh McRoberts, Dahntay Jones dealt before NBA trade deadline

J.J. Redick isn?t the only Orlando Magic player on the move today.

Former Duke basketball players Dahntay Jones, Elton Brand and J.J. Redick spoke to Duke alums after last night's Dallas Mavericks-Orlando Magic game. Jones and Redick were both traded today. (Photo credit: Scott McCartney)

In addition to shipping Redick to the Milwaukee Bucks, forward Josh McRoberts has reportedly been traded to the Charlotte Bobcats in exchange for former Syracuse forward Hakim Warrick.

McRoberts was averaging 16.7 minutes per game for the Magic, but had been a healthy scratch three of the team?s last four games. Warrick, who was already traded once this season, has played in just one game since January 28. He is expected to be immediately waived by his new team.

In Charlotte, McRoberts will join former Blue Devil Gerald Henderson, who is third on the team with 13.1 points per game.

Meanwhile, Atlanta Hawks general manager and former Blue Devil Danny Ferry made a trade to acquire a fellow Duke alum, Dahntay Jones. Guard Anthony Morrow was the compensation sent to the Dallas Mavericks to complete the trade. Jones has made 15 starts for the Mavericks this season, but has been in and out of the rotation all season. He could see time for the playoff-bound Hawks as a defensive stopper to compliment sharp-shooter Kyle Korver.

It's a deal! OfficeMax, Office Depot to merge

Is there a deal or isn't there? Apparently there is.

The boards of Office Depot and Office Max confirmed Wednesday that they agreed to combine the two companies in a $1.2 billion, all-stock deal that could alter the balance of power in the office supply retail market.

The boards of both companies approved the deal after a confusing morning in which the deal was announced prematurely.

The deal, one of several large-scale acquisitions announced within the last week, had been buried within Office Depot's fourth quarter earnings release, which is not a typical way that companies trumpet a deal of this size. A source told Reuters that the statement had been a draft and that, at the time, the deal was not yet completed.

Under the terms of the deal, OfficeMax stockholders will receive 2.69 Office Depot common shares for each share of OfficeMax common stock. In a joint statement, the office suppliers said the new company would be valued at $18 billion. The new company would have an equal number of Office Depot and Office Max directors on its board.

The two companies are competitors to Staples, the world's largest supplier of office goods. The deal may be an attempt by both OfficeMax and Office Depot to become more competitive with Staples, even as they confront declining market share and consumers that move to buy online.

CSeries engine gets Transport Canada certification

Bombardier Inc. announced Wednesday it was close to firming up an order for up to 42 of its new CSeries aircraft from Russian leasing company, Ilyushin Finance Co.

The Moscow-based IFC had originally signed a letter of intent for just 10 of the new aircraft, and put another 10 on option, in August 2011.

But Bombardier said IFC instead signed a purchase agreement for 32 of the larger CSeries, the CS300s, and put an additional 10 on option.

The firm order for 32 aircraft, which is still subject to a vote from Ilyushin shareholders, if valued at US$2.56-billion, based on list price.

If all options are exercised, however, it could grow to US$3.42-billion.

?The aircraft leasing world is changing rapidly,? said Alexander Rubtsov, IFC director general, said in a statement. ?As older, less efficient designs present ongoing challenges to airlines ? given high fuel costs and heightened environmental concerns ? the CSeries aircraft offers transcontinental range, superior field and runway performance, and a superb cabin that will bring air transport into the 21st century.?

Mr. Rubtsov also noted CSeries jetliners is IFC?s first large, non-Russian aircraft order, and, with a seating capacity between 110 and 145 seats, it is ideally suited for the space between the Russian Superjet and the MC-21 aircraft, which IFC has committed to purchase.

The news comes as Bombardier also announced Wednesday that the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engine used on its new CSeries aircraft had achieved type certification from Transport Canada.

The Montreal-based plane and train maker also said it was in the process of final assembly of the first CSeries test aircraft.

More than 4,000 hours of rigorous testing were conducted on the PurePower Geared Turbofan engine before it was certified, the companies said.

Rob Dewar, general manager of the CSeries program, described the news as a ?significant milestone and critical step? in the development of the plane.

Bombardier has said it expects the first flight of the CSeries to occur by the end of June after a six-month delay to the program was announced last November.

http://www.latimes.com/business/technology/la-fi-tn-mtv-bet-fake-hack-twitter-followers-20130219,0,6633758.story By Salvador Rodriguez Los Angeles Times February 19, 2013
In an apparent move to gain Twitter followers, sister networks MTV and BET pretended hackers took over their accounts.

Tuesday's publicity stunt came after Burger King and Jeep had their Twitter accounts hijacked by hackers who switched their profiles to show information for their respective rivals McDonald's and Cadillac.

MTV and BET, which are owned by Viacom, pretended the same kind of hacking was happening to their accounts by switching profile photos and logos. MTV became BET, and vice versa.

The stunt lasted for about an hour until MTV tweeted: "We totally Catfish-ed you guys. Thanks for playing! <3 you, @BET. ;)." That was followed by a tweet from BET that said: "#fakehackedswag !!! salute to @MTV for rockin this!"

Alabama House passes bill tightening restrictions on abortion clinics

MOBILE, Alabama (Reuters) - The Alabama House of Representatives passed legislation on Tuesday that would tighten regulations for abortion clinics in a move critics say could force many in the state to close.

The Republican-controlled House approved the bill in a 73-23 vote. The bill now moves to the Senate, which also has a Republican majority, for consideration.

The bill, called The Women's Health and Safety Act, would mandate that an Alabama-licensed physician be present at every abortion and those doctors would be required to have admitting privileges at local hospitals.

In Mississippi, the state's lone abortion clinic has filed a lawsuit to halt a new state law similar to the bill passed in Alabama, arguing it is unconstitutional and saying it will eventually lead to its closure.

Supporters of the Alabama bill say it is intended to make abortion clinics meet the same standards as hospitals and would ensure the safety of women who choose to have abortions.

A proposed amendment that would have prohibited hospitals from denying admitting privileges to abortion doctors solely because they performed the procedures was voted down by lawmakers.

Under current law, abortion clinics partner with local doctors who have hospital admitting privileges to provide follow-up care.

"This truly is a women's rights bill," state Representative Mary Sue McClurkin, a Republican who sponsored the legislation, said in a statement. "It protects the right of a woman having an abortion to have it in a safe and healthy environment.

However, some Democrats said they worry it could eventually force the closure of abortion clinics.

"At the end of the day, we need to make sure we are not imposing some type of restriction on abortion that would put a woman's right to choose in jeopardy," Representative Juandalynn Givan told TV channel WSFA.

A Two-Family in Brooklyn for Under $200,000?

Over the weekend, the Times? real estate section profiled a young couple looking for a two-family home in Bushwick and Bed-Stuy. And while we?re been reading about homes going for incredibly high prices, like 254 Gates Avenue in Bed-Stuy that topped $2 million, this pair looked at several houses, none of which was priced over $450,000. In the end they did far better than that, on price anyway. They were able to find a bank sale on the home pictured above ? the one with the white peeling siding ? for $190,000 on Hart Street in Bushwick, just a block and a half from the Central Avenue M train. Obviously this is no grand mansion, but it is a standing two-family home, and apparently in decent enough shape to be renovated. The home was listed quite a bit higher at $280,000. Their loan included an additional $145,000 for repairs. The couple are now renovating ? their blog is here. What do you think? Is this a wise investment for the long haul, or an inexpensive initial purchase that may well turn into a never-ending money pit?

GOLF: Tiger Woods joins vacationing Obama for golf round

PALM CITY, Fla. (AP) ? President Barack Obama teed it up with Tiger Woods on Sunday.

The White House confirmed that the President and the world's most famous golfer played a round at a secluded, exclusive yacht and golf club on Florida's Treasure Coast.

Once the sport's dominant player before his career was sidetracked by scandal, Woods joined Obama at the Floridian, where Obama is spending the long Presidents Day weekend. The two had met before, but Sunday was the first time they played together.

The White House, which has promised to be the most open and transparent in history, has prohibited any media coverage of Obama's golf outing.

The foursome also included Jim Crane, a Houston businessman who owns the Floridian and baseball's Houston Astros, and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a former mayor of Dallas, said White House spokesman Josh Earnest. Crane and Kirk also were part of Obama's foursome on Saturday, the White House said.

Obama, an avid golfer, also received some instruction Saturday and played a few holes with Butch Harmon, Woods' former swing coach.

Initial word that the First Duffer would play a round with the world's No. 2 player didn't come from the White House, but instead came from veteran golf journalist Tim Rosaforte, who announced it on Twitter. Rosaforte's late-morning tweet said: "The president is arriving at the Floridian range. Awaiting is Tiger Woods and club owner Jim Crane. Historic day in golf. Their first round."

White House confirmation of Woods' participation came about two hours later, following multiple appeals from traveling White House reporters.

Golf Digest reported on its website that Obama spent eight hours Saturday with Harmon, playing 27 holes and hitting balls in Harmon's studio, and then managed to coordinate Sunday's round with Woods. The report said the original plan called for Obama and Woods, a Florida resident, to play at Woods' home club ? The Medalist Golf Club, a half-hour away in Hobe Sound. But they eventually opted for the Floridian.

Woods departed Sunday after the first 18 holes, with Obama staying on to play another nine, the report said.

"Just to see the interaction between the two on the range was pretty neat," Harmon told Golf Digest. "The President said to Tiger: 'The last tournament you played was fun to watch. It's good to see you play well again.' You could tell he meant it. It just wasn't a throw it out compliment."

It seems Obama and Woods ? the first black men at the top of their respective fields ? have spent the past few years inching toward Sunday's meeting on the fairway.

They met in January 2009, during Obama's inauguration in Washington. Four months later, in April, Woods visited the White House and Obama received him in the Oval Office.

Woods' personal life imploded later in 2009 after revelations that he had engaged in multiple extramarital affairs, leading to divorce. He followed with a public apology and announced he was taking an indefinite break from golf. Shortly after Woods announced he was coming out of seclusion, Obama said in an interview with Fox News Channel that Woods will still be a "terrific" golfer despite his personal issues.

After returning to the sport, Woods went two years without winning, but his game is back on track and he currently is ranked No. 2 in the world. Woods won the last tournament he played, three weeks ago in San Diego.

The White House made clear from the start of Obama's trip that there would be no coverage of him because he would be on vacation with no plans to leave the club, which remained open to members and their guests.

It arranged for the pool of reporters who traveled with Obama to bunk at a Holiday Inn about a 20-minute drive away in Port St. Lucie. Whenever the reporters were brought to the Floridian on the off chance that Obama might leave the property, they were taken no further than a maintenance shed beyond the club gates but on the edge of the grounds.

The presence at the Floridian of a professional journalist who tweeted about Obama's game as he was playing, while White House reporters essentially were locked out, brought a sharp response from Ed Henry, the Fox News Channel correspondent who also is president of the White House Correspondents' Association.

"A broad cross section of our members from print, radio, online and TV have today expressed extreme frustration to me about having absolutely no access to the president of the United States this entire weekend," Henry said in a statement. "There is a very simple but important principle we will continue to fight for today and in the days ahead: transparency."

In response, Earnest, the White House spokesman said: "The press access granted by the White House today is entirely consistent with the press access offered for previous presidential golf outings. It's also consistent with the press access promised to the White House Press Corps prior to arrival in Florida on Friday evening."

Previous administrations have allowed brief news media coverage at either the beginning or the end of presidential golf games. Obama's policy generally is no coverage at all, but exceptions were made for separate outings he had in 2011 with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and former President Bill Clinton.

Golf Channel said Rosaforte is a member of the Floridian who sent his tweets from the clubhouse. Rosaforte did not have access to the course or to Obama, the network said.

Obama is in Florida while his wife and daughters are on an annual ski vacation out West. He was due to arrive back in Washington on Monday night.

Sports Illustrated: Michael Jordan ? The 50th Cover

sport-illustrated-the-50th-

Years after he last took the court, Michael Jordan is still a major presence in sports culture. To celebrate the iconic superstar?s 50th birthday, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED has placed Jordan on its February 18th cover for a record 50th time. In this week?s issue, Senior writer Phil Taylor looks at Jordan?s lasting effect on basketball, and sports in general, and examines his recent stint as a basketball executive for the Charlotte Bobcats.

Jordan, who built his own brand and spoiled us with his heroic performances, now spends his days at his $12.4 million mansion in Jupiter, Fla., or his $3.2 million condo in downtown Charlotte. Taylor notes that Jordan still golfs and runs steakhouses, all while floundering as an executive for the Bobcats (Their .106 winning percentage last season was the worst in NBA History). However, players, and the general public, still want to be like Mike.[...]
