Korean pop rides "Gangnam Style" into U.S. music scene

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Gangnam Style," the catchy Korean song by rapper Psy, may have danced its way into the American charts but the Korean pop industry isn't horsing around when it comes to capitalizing on the singer's phenomenal U.S. success.

With "Gangnam Style" topping the current Billboard Digital Songs chart and becoming the most-watched video on YouTube ever with more than 800 million views, fellow Korean pop, or K-pop, artists are positioning themselves for similar U.S. breakthroughs.

Korea's pop music industry is thriving. Over the past two years, a handful of K-pop acts including girl group 2NE1, boy band Super Junior and nine-piece band Girls Generation have embarked on mini-promotional tours around the United States to build their audience.

"Psy has opened doors and is shining a spotlight on K-pop. People are paying attention to what's being done there," Alina Moffat, general manager at YG Entertainment group, which manages Psy, told a recent entertainment industry conference in Los Angeles.

Psy's vibrant music video, featuring his invisible pony-riding dance, also featured K-pop artists Kim Hyun-a of girl band 4Minute, and Deasung and Seungri of boy band Big Bang, all of whom are attempting to crack the U.S. market.

"YouTube has really changed the awareness of K-pop. Both American kids and second-generation Korean American kids are discovering it," Kye Kyoungbon Koo, director of the Korea Creative Content Agency, told a panel at a Billboard and Hollywood Reporter conference in Los Angeles in October.

MARKETING THE NEXT BIG THING

For U.S. companies looking to invest, K-pop is being marketed as the next big thing, boasting young, stylish and influential artists who command devoted fan followings.

Moffat said car companies and mobile phone brands were among those being courted at KCON, a convention held in October in Irvine in Southern California that showcased K-pop artists.

"Kids are coming, they're engaged, they want to spend money and sponsors saw that," Moffat said.

Whether Psy or other K-pop artists can command a global following to rival Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber or Rihanna remains to be seen, but John Shim, senior producer at MTV World, believes it is the right genre to compete with pop music's biggest names.

"K-pop admittedly is a very niche genre but I also think it's the best equipped of Asian pop to cater to the U.S. audience," Shim told Reuters.

Psy has helped to break down language barriers, keeping "Gangnam Style" in its original Korean form instead of adapting it to English when it became an international hit.

The singer told Reuters he was persuaded to keep it that way by his manager Scooter Braun, the talent scout responsible for Justin Bieber's success, who signed Psy to his record label.

"I thought, 'Should I translate this or not?' because (the fans) have got to know what I'm talking about, and lyrics are a huge part," Psy said.

CHATTING IN ENGLISH

But industry executives say at least one member of each K-Pop group is usually taught to be fluent in conversational English.

"The investment in language is costly, but effective," said Ted Kim, president of South Korean music television channel Mnet. "It really matters that Psy can go on the Ellen DeGeneres TV show and have a conversation."

Psy said he was proud his song succeeded in Korean, but he now wants to branch out into English.

"'Gangnam Style' is not the sort of thing that's going to happen twice. I've definitely got to make something in English so I can communicate with my fans right now," the singer said.

In Korea, bands such as SM Entertainment's Super Junior and Girls Generation have became branding powerhouses, scoring endorsements ranging from cosmetics, fashion, video games, electronics and beverages.

In the United States, companies such as Samsung have already jumped on the K-pop train, sponsoring Korean boy band Big Bang's U.S. tour.

But while the genre is gaining steam in the charts, it has yet to spill into ticket sales for tours, according to Gary Bongiovanni, editor in chief at Pollstar.com, which tracks concert sales.

"Psy may be able to sell out arenas in Asia, but not yet here. For the American audience, he has to prove that he's more than a novelty act," Bongiovanni said.

"K-pop has to prove itself before large companies spend money on it," he added.

Swisscom rolls out first LTE in Switzerland on November 29th

The European LTE landscape is unfortunately a fragmented one that favors large countries with large carriers. We can chalk up at least one victory for the smaller nation states, however: Switzerland is getting its first LTE network on November 29th. The country's main provider, Swisscom, is launching initial 4G coverage in 26 cities and regions using the LTE-equipped HTC One X (One XL abroad), quickly following up with the early December availability of the Galaxy S III, Galaxy Note II and Nokia Lumia 920. A Huawei USB stick and a ZTE hotspot will also be on tap. Customers won't need to spring for a new plan to use the new network on a basic level, although Swisscom's uncommon speed-based phone plans mean they'll be paying a stiff 169 francs ($181) per month to max out the 4G network. We imagine at least some will bite if it means speedy data in Zurich.

[Thanks, Joël]

EE increases data caps for 4G mobile broadband plans, introduces SIM-only 30-day option

Android Central

EE, the UK's only 4G LTE mobile network, has announced that it's increasing the amount of data available to its mobile broadband customers -- that's anyone using one of EE's data-only plans with a compatible device.

Customers on a 2GB allowance will see that increased to 3GB, 3GB users will get bumped up to 5GB, and 5GB customers will have their data cap increased all the way to 8GB. Monthly fees will remain the same.

EE is also launching a SIM-only data-only plan on a rolling 30-day contract, which offers 5GB for £15.99 per month. EE doesn't currently sell any 4G-capable Android tablets, but if you've already picked one up (and it supposed LTE on 1800MHz), you'll be able to use it with this new price plan. To sweeten the deal, EE says the first month of service will be free for those signing up before Dec. 23.

Unfortunately the new price plans don't extend to EE's smartphone SIMs, which require a minimum commitment of 12 months on SIM-only, or 24 months if you include a phone.

More details in the presser after the break.

What If There Was a Cold War Between the U.S. and China?

ChinaFotoPress / ZUMA PRESS

A J-15 fighter jet lands on China's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, Nov. 24, 2012.

This is a ?what if? interview from the World Economic Forum?s Risk Response Network. To view the rest of the series, click?here.

We?re already seeing a return to Cold War era containment strategies as the relationship between the world?s two largest economies deteriorates, argues Ian Bremmer, president of the Eurasia Group and author of?Every Nation for Itself: Winners and Losers in a G-Zero World.?The World Economic Forum, in collaboration with TIME, quizzed Bremmer on the nature of U.S.-Chinese tensions and what can be done to soften them.

Why is the specter of U.S.-China confrontation so real?

We?re in a situation where the world?s largest economy is not doing so well, the world?s second largest economy is still growing very strongly, albeit at a slower rate, and the two countries have totally incompatible economic and political systems. The relationship between China and America is only becoming more problematic. In the foreign policy debates ahead of the US presidential elections, Obama referred to China as an ?adversary? for the first time. It?s not just about political posturing. China is the single biggest challenge to US foreign policy, in that Americans mostly see foreign policy in terms of how it impacts the American economy, and China is increasingly a market that many people believe is not playing by the rules, from intellectual property to state capitalism to cyber attacks.

(MORE: Why China Could Be Obama?s Second-Term Foreign Policy Headache)

Similarly, in Chinese state media, you?re seeing much more assertiveness, more talk of the Americans trying to contain China, the Americans ?not wanting us to be world beaters?, ?not wanting us to be number one?. There?s no question that the Americans and the Chinese at the highest level do understand that it?s dangerous for both countries to allow their relationship to be a disaster, so they?re trying to avoid unnecessary conflict. But the problem isn?t really unnecessary conflict?it?s that the necessary conflict over huge structural issues like currency and trade is building up.

What warning signs have you seen?

There?s the massive increase in tensions between China and Japan: in the last few weeks, there were anti-Japan demonstrations in about 100 cities in China, Japanese car sales in China were down 49% last month, and every CEO I spoke to at the recent IMF meeting in Tokyo said that this issue would dramatically change their view on doing business in China. This is significant because, ultimately, America is Japan?s defence policy: they have a strategic alliance, so if there is a problem between Japan and China, we know where the US is going to come down.

How does China?s holding of U.S. government debt affect the relationship?

The Japanese are actually on track to become the largest holder of US debt, externally, not China. China is trying to decouple from the dollar. If you look at what they?re doing in building domestic consumption and expanding South-South trade, then it?s clear they want to be in a position where there?s less mutual dependence with America. But that?s a long way off, and China is still very much America?s banker.

What about China?s political succession?

In China, you don?t have strong individual leaders, you have government by consensus, so as a consequence the actual composition of the leadership is not going to influence foreign policy too much. What you do have are a lot of moving pieces. There?s the Bo Xilai scandal, there?s the way Xi Jinping disappeared off the scene for a couple of weeks: these things cause all kinds of rumours, and then the government becomes more risk averse as a result. Both because of the political transition and the slowdown ? globally and in China ? Chinese government officials are less willing to take risks, and those risks include the transition of their economy and their? political system towards more structural reform. That?s what?s needed for China to have a better relationship with the US, and it?s absolutely not happening.

(MORE: After Obama?s Visit to Rangoon, What?s Next for Burma-China-U.S. Relations?)

If the relationship were to deteriorate further, how would this happen?

It?s already becoming a new kind of cold war. What this means is that the Americans and the Chinese will be frenemies. They?re not going to become enemies, because that?s not possible, but they?re not friends any more, either. All of America?s allies are very much afraid of China?s rise, so they?re begging the US to play a more significant role in Asia. You can see what the Americans are doing in response: in South Korea, they sign a new ballistic missile deal, in Indonesia they send over fighter aircrafts, in Australia they send a whole bunch of marines to Darwin, and on and on. There have been lots of joint military exercises in Vietnam and the Philippines. Then there?s also the question of cyber attacks: China is America?s principle enemy in this area, and vice versa.

The big question is to what extent all this is going to bleed over directly into the economic relationship. It?s already starting to, in that a lot of American firms are saying ?We don?t have the access we used to into China, and furthermore the Chinese are stealing all our stuff.? As the Chinese firms get larger, that will start to have a greater impact on trade. The Doha round of international trade talks was meant to include China, but that?s dead, and China isn?t part of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. On a big strategic level, all this is increasingly looking like cold war, like containment.

What would be the next phase?

You?d start to see more tit for tats on new trade tariffs, and new sanctions between the two countries. America would press its allies much harder to align their investment policies with the US. You?d start to see US corporate leaders publicly coming out and taking an anti-China perspective, while the Chinese would be more aggressive about the need to work away from the dollar as the reserve currency.

On a cultural level, in America you would see fewer Chinese students, fewer Chinese people buying properties there. And Lord knows, there is always the potential for xenophobia: you only have to think back to the Japanese internment camps. Anti-Chinese sentiment would be a dangerous and an ugly thing, especially if you continue to have this growing divide between the rich and poor. On the other side, it?s not unthinkable that a Chinese government under pressure domestically would push anti-American sentiment as a palliative.

(MORE: Asia?s Passport Wars: Chinese Map Triggers Diplomatic Firestorm)

The original Cold War was a clash between two clearly opposed ideologies. Is that the case here?

America?s ideology has not fundamentally changed, though it?s not as palatable or powerful as it used to be. It?s all about individual freedoms and liberties, democracy and free market enterprise. Over recent years, the U.S. has taken many hits on this, whether you look at the financial crisis, or human rights abuses at Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib, or the incredible power of corporate interests in its elections. But having said all that, you still can?t compare where the U.S. stands on these issues and where a country like China does.

China has no rule of law. It is an authoritarian political system and a state capitalist system. It?s not as if the Chinese are publicly promoting the notion that everyone should be authoritarian or that everyone should be state capitalist: Chinese ideology is about the Chinese state. It does not develop allies based on shared values; it develops allies based on shared interest. This is not true for the US: of course it has allies based on interest, but historical allies based on shared values play an oversized role, whether we?re talking about Britain and the US, or Israel and the US.

In this context, what would be the equivalent of a Cuban missile crisis?

Either a massive cyber attack, or the United States stepping in to defend the Japanese if they got into a conflict with China over contested territories. But there we?re talking about a cold war spilling over into a hot war, and I think the likelihood of that is very, very low, because national security today is driven much more by economics rather than geopolitics.

How well prepared are we for the challenges of a new cold war?

We?re not. The old, US-driven institutions like the G20 are no longer functioning adequately.

What are the solutions?

Don?t allow the great to be the enemy of the good. Allow more manageable, smaller organisations with more like-minded countries and more like-minded actors (like corporates, NGOs and individuals) to provide some form of leadership to respond to these issues. Ultimately, if the US is going to have a productive relationship with China, which is what everyone wants, you have to have strong baseline organisations that the Chinese want to join. When the WTO was created, nobody thought that China would ever be a member, but it became so strong and inclusive that the Chinese decided that the opportunities of joining outweighed the risks. We need institutions in place that will become attractive to the Chinese government, as their population gets wealthier and more people would support the rule of law. Ultimately, you need to create the kinds of clubs that the Chinese feel they need to join.

Islamist-led assembly votes on Egypt constitution

Signs are growing the constitutional panel at the heart of the showdown could vote on a draft this week despite a walkout by liberal and Christian members. (AP Photo/Maya Alleruzzo)

CAIRO (AP) ? An Islamist-dominated panel began a fast-track vote on a final draft of a new Egyptian constitution Thursday, pushing through the document despite liberals' boycott in a move likely to stoke a deepening political crisis between the Islamist president and the opposition.

The assembly, overwhelmingly made up of allies of President Mohammed Morsi, abruptly moved up the vote ? which hadn't been expected to take place for another two months ? in order to pass the draft before Egypt's Supreme Constitution Court rules on Sunday on whether to dissolve the panel.

The vote escalates a confrontation that has already thrown Egypt into turmoil, between Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood supporters on one side and a largely secular and liberal opposition and the nation's judiciary on the other. It was sparked when Morsi last week granted himself near absolute powers to neutralize the judiciary, the last branch of the state not in his hands.

The confrontation has already led to street clashes between the two camps ? and more violence is possible. At least 200,000 people protested in Cairo's Tahrir square earlier this week against Morsi's decrees. The opposition plans another large protest for Friday, and the Brotherhood has called a similar massive rally for the following day.

Only a week ago, Morsi had given the 100-member panel two more months to try to iron out the sharp differences over the draft after his edicts barred the courts from dissolving the body. But when the Constitutional Court defied his decree and said Wednesday that it would rule on the panel's legitimacy, the date of the vote was immediately moved up.

Over the past week, about 30 members have pulled out of the assembly to protest what they call the hijacking of the process by Islamists loyal to Morsi. As Thursday's session began, the assembly held a vote to formally remove 11 of those who withdrew and replace them with reserve members ? who largely belong to the Islamist camp. The 11 included former foreign minister and presidential candidate Amr Moussa, liberal politician Waheed Abdel-Maguid and two Christians.

As a result, as the members began voting on the draft article by article, each passed overwhelmingly. The draft largely reflects the conservative vision of the Islamists, with articles that rights activists, liberals and others fear will lead to restrictions on the rights of women and minorities and on civil liberties in general.

One article that passed underlined that the state will protect "the true nature of the Egyptian family ... and promote its morals and values," as well as balance between a woman's "duties to her family and her public work." The draft also contains no article specifically establishing equality between men and women because of disputes over the phrasing.

As in past constitutions, the new draft says that the "principles of Islamic law" will be the basis of law. But in a new article, the draft states that Egypt's most respected Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, must be consulted on any matters related to Shariah, a measure critics fear will lead to oversight of legislation by clerics.

Praising the draft, panel president Hossam al-Ghiryani, told members: "We will teach this constitution to our sons."

Morsi is expected to call for a referendum on the draft as early as mid-December.

The committee has been plagued by controversy from the start. It was created by the first parliament elected after the fall last year of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. But a first permutation of the assembly, also Islamist-dominated, was disbanded by the courts. A new one was created just before the lower house of parliament, also Brotherhood-led, was dissolved by the judiciary earlier this year.

Dissolving the panel and replacing it with a more inclusive body is a key demand by the liberal-led opposition. It also calls for rescinding the president's decrees that placed him above oversight of any kind, including by the courts, and shielded the panel and the upper chamber of parliament, known as the Shura Council, from the courts.

Defying Morsi's edict, the constitutional court on Sunday will also decide on the legitimacy of the Shura Council, which overwhelmingly consists of Islamists. Egypt's judiciary dissolved the lower-house of parliament earlier this year, and after taking office in June, Morsi took on legislative powers himself.

If the constitution passes, Morsi will hand over legislative powers to the Shura Council until elections for a new lower house are held, according to Prime Minister Hesham Kandil. The Shura Council is normally a toothless body and very few Egyptians voted in elections for it last winter ? turnout was less than 10 percent ? which led to the Brotherhood and other Islamists taking the vast majority of its seats.

Morsi's edicts have brought to a head the long brewing tensions between the president and the opposition. Critics accuse the Brotherhood, from which Morsi hails, of using their election victories to monopolize the state, squeezing out other factions, and pushing through an Islamist vision.

Morsi and his supporters say his decrees were necessary to "protect the revolution" and prevent the judiciary from holding up what they say is a transition to democracy.

Morsi became the country's first ever freely elected president when he narrowly won a June vote against Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq. His critics say he and his Muslim Brotherhood are too preoccupied with tightening their grip on power to effectively deal with some of the country's many pressing problems.

Verizon and NBCUniversal bring TV Everywhere to even more places

Verizon and NBCUniversal has struck a "TV Everywhere" rights agreement so that FiOS customers will be able to watch the media company's entire programming portfolio live and on-demand via multiple platforms. In fact, some of the programming is accessible via the Verizon FiOS Mobile iPad app already, like USA, CNBC, MSNBC and Bravo. The agreement extends to retransmission rights from local NBC and Telemundo stations, future Olympic games and various Comcast SportsNet markets like Philadelphia, Mid Atlantic and New England. Hoping that exclusive movie rental window like the one in the UK will cross the pond? Don't hold your breath, but Verizon FiOS customers shouldn't have long to wait for the NBCUniversal package, which starts early next year.

Wall Street flat as caution reigns supreme

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stocks barely budged on Tuesday as wrangling continued in Washington over key budget talks, counterbalancing progress in easing Greece's debt burden and a slew of positive U.S. economic data.

A deal in Europe to release emergency aid to debt-laden Greece gave a brief early lift to stocks, but the news was not enough to sustain the gains as investors confronted the looming "fiscal cliff" at home that could bring higher taxes and spending cuts.

As Democrats and Republicans prepared to resume efforts to bridge their sharp differences over taming the federal debt this week in Washington, the market resumed its cautious stance.

A number of companies, including Wal-Mart and Las Vegas Sands , have issued special dividends aimed at helping investors avoid what could be a substantially increased tax burden next year. That continued on Tuesday, with Supertex and Heico Corp both announcing dividends. The number is expected to grow through the end of the year.

Las Vegas Sands, which made the announcement late Monday, jumped 5.7 percent to $46.54. Heico climbed 3 percent to $41.56, while Supertex rose 2.8 percent to $17.31.

"It's about your money, and it's about right now," said Frank Lesh, a futures analyst and broker at FuturePath Trading LLC in Chicago. "At this point, you have to make your moves and avoid the threat of more taxes.

"Until there is deal, I would expect to see more of those machinations - just in case," he said.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> dropped 23.45 points, or 0.18 percent, to 12,943.92. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> inched up just 0.15 of a point, or 0.01 percent, to 1,406.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> added 4.70 points, or 0.16 percent, to 2,981.48.

The market's worry is whether Congress and the White House can agree on ways to avoid some $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases that are due to kick in early next year. Some fear that dramatic fiscal restraint could push the U.S. economy into recession.

Market reaction was muted as data showed U.S. consumer confidence in November hit the highest level in more than four years and home prices in September rose for an eighth straight month.

In addition, a gauge of planned U.S. business spending increased by the most in five months in October, according to the Commerce Department's data on durable goods orders.

As of Monday's close, the S&P 500 was holding above 1,400, the level it reclaimed last week. But volume continued to be weak as traders waited for signs of any progress in negotiations to avoid the fiscal cliff. Last week, the S&P 500 gained nearly 4 percent.

Among individual stocks, Corning Inc shares rose 7.8 percent to $12.24 after the specialty glass maker said it expects full-year sales of its Gorilla glass, used in smartphones and tablets, to approach $1 billion.

McMoRan Exploration Co shares tumbled 12.5 percent to $8.44 after the oil and gas exploration company said on Monday that it could not achieve a measurable flow test at its Davy Jones No. 1 deep gas well in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ericsson Sues Samsung Over Wireless Patents

Ericsson is the latest to file a patent suit against Samsung after the?Swedish telecoms firm accused the Korean electronics giant of refusing to sign FRAND (Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory)?licensing agreements despite two years of negotiation.

Update: Samsung has issued a statement on the lawsuit, you can read it below.

?Ericsson has concluded that it has no option other than legal action after negotiations have not been successful since Samsung has refused to take a license on FRAND terms,??a company statement read.

The company says that the issue centers around one of its patented technologies that is ?essential?to several telecommunications and networking standards used by Samsung?s products?, in addition to other technologies that it claims are used in wireless and consumer electronics products.

FRAND licensing is typically used to license patents and technologies that have become essential, often for or as an industry standard. They are designed to stop monopolies, the idea being that a FRAND licensed technology can be offered to any company or group wanting to use it.

The growth of patent suits has added complication to FRAND licensing and Apple, for one, has reached out to industry bodies for greater clarification and change. In a letter to?the?European Telecommunications Standards Institute?(ETSI) in February, it is?said to have proposed suggestions to set royalty rates that all members of the ETSI would follow, in response to cases where inflated and unreasonable terms and prices have been proposed by patent owners.

Samsung was on the receiving end of a landmark decision when a US court decision handed it a fine of more than $1 billion?after?Apple won a key U.S. patent case. The Cupertino firm itself suffered a significant recent loss and $368 million fine as patent specialist VirtnetX won a Texas case against it, but Apple did end its ongoing feud with HTC as the two signed a 10-year licensing agreement this month.

Samsung told media it has no intention of striking a similar deal, despite the threat of US sales injunctions looming. Now it has one further case to concern itself with.

Update: Samsung has responded with the following statement (note Samsung later sent us an updated statement which is below ? the earlier version used the word ?prohibitively? in place of ?significantly?):

?Samsung and Ericsson have previously negotiated and entered licensing deals. Now that the deal has to be renewed, we have faithfully committed ourselves to conducting fair and reasonable negotiations with Ericsson over the past two years, but this time Ericsson has demanded significantly higher royalty rates for the same patent portfolio.

?As we cannot accept such extreme demands, we will take all necessary legal measures to protect against Ericsson?s excessive claims.?

last bastion - Houston Criminal Law Blog - David Breston

that - to my way of thinking - is what our legal system is. Be prepared - I?m about to ?wax long and reflective? - and I can?t even say what got me started this morning. Perhaps it was the phone call from a desperate woman - wanting an answer that would prevent her from deportation with her family - maybe it was the young man whose earnest plea for help in the face of false allegations of sexual assault caught my empathy -

or maybe it?s simply looking around at the world in general and realizing that often people have nowhere to turn when caught in the ?sights? of an anonymous government who cares not about ?your? personal story.

I don?t know whether I?m old enough to understand the true machinations of the world - or young enough to still believe in what many call a fairy tale - authentic justice.

What is a bastion? It is a citadel, a stronghold - a fortress that offers protection and relief for those in need. Wouldn?t you say that is why most people pursue the study of law - to be a ?soldier in the legal army? that stands up to injustice.

Now, that?s enough of my reflecting on the greater promise of the law as a career! I will return you to our regularly scheduled blog entries.

Rolling Stones turn back clock, rock in London

By Mike Collett-White, Reuters

LONDON -- The Rolling Stones turned back the clock in style on Sunday with their first concert in five years, strutting and swaggering their way through hit after familiar hit to celebrate 50 years in business.

Toby Melville / Reuters

The Rolling Stones perform at the O2 Arena in London on Sunday, Nov. 25.

Before a packed crowd of 20,000 at London's O2 Arena, they banished doubts that age may have slowed down one of the world's greatest rock and roll bands, as lead singer Mick Jagger launched into "I Wanna Be Your Man."

More than two hours of high-octane, blues-infused rock later, and they were still going strong with an impressive encore comprising "You Can't Always Get What You Want" and "Jumpin' Jack Flash."

In between there were guest appearances from American R&B singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige, who delivered a rousing duet with Jagger on "Gimme Shelter" and guitarist Jeff Beck who provided the power chords for "I'm Going Down."

Former Rolling Stones Bill Wyman and Mick Taylor were also back in the fold, performing with the regular quartet of Jagger, Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards on guitar and Charlie Watts on drums for the first time in 20 years.

"It took us 50 years to get from Dartford to Greenwich!" said Jagger, referring to their roots just a few miles from the venue in southeast London. "But you know, we made it. What's even more amazing is that you're still coming to see us ... we can't thank you enough."

The Sunday night gig was the first of two at the O2 Arena before the band crosses the Atlantic to play three dates in the United States.

The mini-tour is the culmination of a busy few months of events, rehearsals and recordings to mark 50 years since the rockers first took to the stage at the Marquee Club on London's Oxford Street in July, 1962.

There has been a photo album, two new songs, a music video, a documentary film, a blitz of media appearances and a handful of warm-up gigs in Paris.

'Style and panache'
The reunion nearly did not happen. One factor behind the long break since their record-breaking "A Bigger Bang" tour in 2007 has been Wood's struggle with alcohol addiction, while Jagger and Richards also fell out over comments the guitarist made about the singer in a 2010 autobiography.

But they eventually buried the hatchet, and Richards joked in a recent interview: "We can't get divorced?-- we're doing it for the kids!"

Critics were fulsome in their praise of the first comeback gig.

"Keith Richards has said that the beauty of rock and roll is that every night a different band might be the world's greatest. Well, last night at the O2 Arena, it was the turn of the Rolling Stones themselves to lay claim to the title they invented," wrote Neil McCormick of the Daily Telegraph.

"And they did it with some style and panache."

The big question on every fan's lips is whether the five concerts lead to a world tour and even new material. The Stones sang their two new tracks "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot," which appeared on their latest greatest hits album "GRRR!".

Richards has hinted that the five concerts ending at the Newark Prudential Center in the United States on Dec. 15 would not be the last.

"Once the juggernaut starts rolling, it ain't gonna stop," he told Rolling Stone magazine. "So without sort of saying definitely yes?-- yeah. We ain't doing all this for four gigs!"

The band has come in for criticism from fans about the high price of tickets to the shows?-- they ranged from around 95 pounds ($150) to up to 950 pounds for a VIP seat.

The flamboyant veterans, whose average age is 68, have defended the costs, saying the shows were expensive to put on, although specialist music publication Billboard reported the band would earn $25 million from the four shows initially announced. A fifth was added later.

"Everybody all right there in the cheap seats," Jagger asked pointedly as he looked high to his left at the arena. "They're not really cheap though are they? That's the trouble."

Among the biggest cheers on the night were for classics including "Wild Horses", "It's Only Rock and Roll" and "Start Me Up."

There was even time for the odd reference to their advancing years.

"Good to see you all," said Richards with a mischievous grin. "Good to see anybody."

Grammy-winning bassist injured in Swiss bus crash

GENEVA (AP) ? Grammy-winning jazz bassist Marcus Miller and several members of his band were injured when their bus overturned Sunday on a busy highway in Switzerland, killing the driver, police said.

The German-registered private bus tipped over as it drove into a bend on the A2 highway in central Switzerland and came to a rest on its side, police in the canton (state) of Uri said. The bus was carrying 13 people ? two drivers and 11 members of the Marcus Miller Band, including Miller.

Over his career, the bassist has worked with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Wayne Shorter, according to his website. He won two Grammys, his first coming in 1991 for Best Rhythm & Blues Song ("Power of Love") along with Luther Vandross and Teddy Vann, and the second came in 2001 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album ("M2").

The band was on its way from Monte Carlo to the Dutch town of Hengelo, the next stop on the American band's tour, where it was due to perform Monday.

The driver who was at the wheel at the time of the accident sustained fatal injuries. Police spokesman Karl Egli said the 12 passengers were injured and taken to hospitals, but none had life-threatening injuries.

Miller was discharged from the hospital later Sunday, as were fellow band members Alex Han and Kris Bowers, but some other band and crew members were being kept in hospitals overnight, according to a post on Miller's official Facebook page.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear. Police believe no other vehicles were involved.

Dubai plans massive tourism and retail project

DUBAI (Reuters) - Dubai announced plans for a huge tourism and retail development including the largest shopping mall in the world, a fresh sign that the glitzy emirate has recovered its commercial ambitions after a crippling corporate debt crisis three years ago.

The development, on the outskirts of Dubai's current downtown area, will include a park 30 percent bigger than Hyde Park in London, said Dubai's ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, also prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.

A retail complex named the "Mall of the World" will be able to host 80 million visitors a year and include over 100 hotel facilities, Sheikh Mohammed said in a statement on Saturday.

A family entertainment centre linked to the mall, developed with Hollywood's Universal Studios, a unit of Comcast Corp , would be designed for 6 million visitors each year.

The development, named "Mohammed Bin Rashid City", would also include a district of art galleries and an area where entrepreneurs could develop businesses.

Sheikh Mohammed did not say how much the development would cost or when it would be finished, but his description indicated investment would total many billions of dollars. It would be built by Dubai Holding , a conglomerate owned by him, and Dubai's leading real estate firm Emaar Properties .

"The current facilities available in Dubai need to be scaled up in line with the future ambitions for the city," Sheikh Mohammed said, adding that Dubai aimed to become a business and cultural capital for 2 billion people in surrounding regions.

Such ambitions would have seemed ludicrous three years ago, when a crash of Dubai's inflated real estate market triggered a corporate debt crisis that forced state-owned conglomerate Dubai World into a $25 billion debt restructuring. Some of Dubai Holding's own units restructured their debt.

Property prices plunged over 50 percent from their peaks and neighbouring Abu Dhabi, which has most of the UAE's oil wealth, came to Dubai's rescue with a bailout worth over $10 billion.

But Dubai, home to the world's tallest building, an archipelago of man-made islands and an indoor ski slope in one of its shopping malls, has staged a dramatic recovery this year, partly because of a tourism boom.

Tourist arrivals grew 10 percent and hotel revenue 19 percent in the first half of 2012. Some state-linked companies have made progress working through their debt loads, while property prices have started to rebound in some areas.

Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East, including Syria's civil war, appear to have helped Dubai, which has attracted funds seeking a politically and economically stable haven.

Several extravagant real estate projects, shelved during the debt crisis, have been revived in the last few months, including a $1 billion replica of India's Taj Mahal that would include a 300-room hotel, and a canal to the city's business district.

Passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport will exceed 50 million people this year and the airport is being expanded. Sheikh Mohammed said traffic would top 90 million in six years and Dubai's development should revolve around this prospect.

"Our development initiatives concerning infrastructure in all sectors should be aligned with this growth rate and we have the determination to reach our objectives and be the first in the region to achieve them," he said.

Sheikh Mohammed did not say how the latest development plan would be financed. Although yields on bonds issued by Dubai firms have plunged this year, showing a return of investor confidence, some bankers are concerned that Dubai is merely pushing many debt maturities into the future without selling assets and taking other difficult steps to cut the debt load.

Standard Chartered said in a research note this month that while the recovery of key areas of its economy would help Dubai, its entities would face nearly $50 billion of liabilities maturing between 2014 and 2016, and there had been "little progress on the deleveraging front".

Boy Laid To Rest 90 Years After His - St. Louis News & Weather from

Posted on: 3:20 pm, November 24, 2012, by Andy Banker, updated on: 07:53am, November 25, 2012

BERKELEY, MO (KTVI) ? It is a horrendous case of abuse and neglect at a North County cemetery. Vandals disturbed the crumbling grave of a seven year old boy at the Washington Park Cemetery near Lambert Airport.

That?s hardly the end of the story, as 90 years after he died, Adolphus Lewis, was once again laid to rest, Saturday.

This cemetery`s story is now so fittingly tied to young Mr. Lewis.

It felt as if his family was there mourning at the memorial and re-committal service; the tragedy fresh.? The boy hit and killed by a car when most people had never seen a car.

?I think you can judge a society by the way they treat their dead,? said Calvin Whitaker of the MO Funeral Directors Association.

Whitaker operates St. Louis Livery Service, which provides transportation services for funerals.

?He`s already passed at 7, then for someone to come out and disturb where he`s resting, it`s heartbreaking,? said Erna French, who volunteered to sing at the service.

Volunteers discovered vandals had exposed his remains; going so far as to pose for photos with his corpse.

Within days, those volunteers ?undid? that horror.

A new vault was donated; the remains buried in a new place; years of abuse and neglect, swept away.

Adolphus Lewis now has the most ornate and most prominent grave site in the cemetery.

?It`s time to give back to this cemetery and make it what it needs to be,? Whitaker told the small group of volunteers and their families, gathered for the service.

Most of the cemetery`s 40 acres are so overgrown it can be hard to see the headstones.

But a new effort, called the ?Adlophus Lewis Project?, is changing that.

Volunteers have cleared 10 acres.

?People are kind of overwhelmed by it. But you`ve just got to take a little section at a time and work on that. We`re going to work through it,? Whitaker said. ?This was kind of a poor representation of the way we treat our dead. We`re just trying to make a bad situation better.

?I believe that somewhere his little spirit is really rejoicing that we would remember and think enough to even consider in these days and times that we would want him to have a beautiful rest,? French said.

Young Mr. Lewis won`t be the only one resting in peace in the Washington Park Cemetery.

If you?d like to donate or volunteer , contact Calvin Whitaker, with the MO Funeral Directors Assocation at St. Louis Livery Service: 314-406-0518, E-Mail: stliverviceservice@yahoo.com

Ultimate Tips And Advice About The Forex Market - Search Forex

The notion that Forex trading is confusing is a common misconception. This only holds true for people who are too lazy to read about Foreign Exchange trading. Fortunately, this article offers some very safe and effective advice.

If you plan to open a managed currency trading account, make sure your broker is a good performer. Try to choose a broker known for good business results and who has been in business for at least five years.

Managing risk in your trading must be your first priority. Be sure to know what losses are acceptable. Wisely choose stopping points and adhere to the limits you set. You can lose everything very quickly if you get too emotional and don?t focus. Do not get yourself into a position to lose, stay ahead.

You may become tempted to invest in a lot of different currencies when starting with Forex. Instead, start with one currency pair until you learn the ropes. When you learn more about the market, try expanding. This technique will help you avoid great losses.

TIP! Use all the resources at your disposal, especially the Internet, to search and find out which Forex brokers you should trust and which you should stay away from. Visit some forums that deal with Forex to talk with other traders.

Try a mini account for your first Forex account. This is like a practice account, but it involves real trading and real money. The mini account is a low-risk method to enter the market for the first time. Use it as an opportunity to identify which trading strategies are most effective, and which strategies you are most comfortable using.

Don?t get involved in numerous markets that might overextend yourself, especially if you are a beginner in foreign exchange trading. This can cause you to feel annoyed or confused. Instead, begin by building your confidence with major currency pairs, where you are more likely to have initial success.

There are no Forex strategies or tools out there that completely eliminate risk. Nothing, including robots, audio books, or any kind of software will do this. Practice makes perfect as you learn from the mistakes you?ve made and give it your best shot.

TIP! Forex markets hold a advantage over others. It open and you can trade anytime.

Too much trading may take the edge off your ability and could exhaust your line of credit. There are times when it is more appropriate to make fewer trades.

Keep a clear head while trading forex. If you get too greedy, you will make too many mistakes. Know what you are good at and what you can do well. It is important to reserve judgment, and learn the market before jumping in.

To succeed on the foreign exchange market, it can be a good idea to stay small and start out with a mini account during the first year of trading. You should be able to differentiate between a favorable trade and one which is unlikely to generate profit.

One thing you should know as a Forex trader is when to pull out. Many traders leave their money hoping the market will readjust and that they can earn back what they lost. This kind of wishful thinking is not sound strategy.

TIP! Few things can benefit forex investors like perseverance. Every trader will run into some bad luck at times.

When you are making profits with trading do not go overboard and be greedy. Trepidation can be as detrimental as being over zealous when it comes to the stock market. Traders should always trade with their heads rather than their hearts.

Think about your schedule when deciding what trading strategy to use. For example, if your daytime trading is limited to two or three hours, you may want to opt for delayed orders and long-term time frames, such as those that are monthly or weekly.

Use the relative strength index for seeing average gains and losses in the market. This should not be used to predict market movement day-to-day, but it might give an idea of long-term returns. Do your research before you invest, and find profitable markets.

Withdrawing some of your Forex gains permits you to enjoy the results of your efforts. If you feel your trades are at their peak worth, withdraw your investment and look for other opportunities to invest. Enjoy the money you have gained through forex, you deserve it!

TIP! Reinvest or hold onto your gains, and use margin trading wisely to maintain your profits. Boost your profits by efficiently using margin.

Four hour charts and daily charts are two essential tools for Forex trading. There are also charts that track each quarter of an hour. The problem with these short-term cycles is that they fluctuate wildly and reflect too much random luck. Try and trade in longer cycles for a safer method.

Before you begin trading with real money, take advantage of practice trading platforms made available to you by your broker. Using a demo platform to learn the ropes of forex trading is a very effective method.

If you lose a trade, resist the urge to seek vengeance. Similarly, never let yourself get greedy when you are doing well. It is vital that you remain calm when trading in foreign exchange. Irrational thinking can cost you a lot of money.

You need to be sure that the top and bottom of the market have taken shape prior to choosing a position. Even though you are still taking a risk, your patience in waiting to make a trade until you know that these positions are confirmed is going to increase your chance of being successful.

TIP! Understand how the market works. When you deal with the market you will lose money eventually.

As was stated in the beginning of the article, trading with Forex is only confusing for those who do not do their research before beginning the trading process. If you take the advice given to you in the above article, you will begin the process of becoming educated in Forex trading.

PC maker Lenovo says profit up 13 percent

(AP) ? Personal computer maker Lenovo Group said Thursday its quarterly profit rose 13 percent as mobile and cloud-based businesses expanded.

The company earned $162 million, or 1.6 cents per share, in the three months ended Sept. 30. Global revenues rose 11 percent to $8.7 billion.

Lenovo is vying with Hewlett-Packard Co. to become the world's biggest personal computer maker but faces a market in which the fastest demand growth is for mobile devices. Research firm Gartner said last month Lenovo outsold HP in the latest quarter but IDC still had HP on top.

Lenovo said sales at its 2-year-old mobile Internet group rose 155 percent to $718 million.

"Our global PC market share reached another historic high, moving us closer to our dream of becoming the worldwide PC leader," said chairman Yang Yuanqing in a statement. He said emerging markets outside China have reached "the profitable growth stage," improving the prospects for future earnings.

Still, profit growth was lower than the previous quarter's 30 percent, reflecting cooling demand for PCs as customer interest shifts to tablets, smartphones and other wireless devices.

PC shipments in Lenovo's home China market grew by 8 percent over a year earlier, down from the previous quarter's 59 percent. Sales in North America grew 7 percent to $1.2 billion in a market in which Lenovo said overall sales contracted by 12 percent.

Lenovo released a new version of its ThinkPad notebook computer, the X1 Carbon, in August that it said was lighter and quicker to appeal to customers who want the convenience of a tablet. Lenovo acquired the ThinkPad brand with IBM Corp.'s personal computer unit in 2005.
