Exactly What Does Personalized Financial Imply For Your Needs ...

Monetary problems are some of the far more unpleasant facets of living. Cash can vanish as soon as it really is produced, occasionally just before then. Whatever your needs is that you may always enhance your finances and spend less, as an alternative to needlessly wasting it at all times.

Continue to be up to date with what?s happening in the world-wide marketplaces. Americans largely ignore information that is not focusing on the Usa and that is a large blunder. By being aware of what is happening around the world, you are able to foresee what the marketplace is going to do.

The one thing you have to do when attemping to become rich is to use below everything you make. Those who overspend their income will never create a savings or find economic convenience. The gold principle is always to save money than what you earn.

The best way to cut costs would be to investigate the option for operating out of your property. Going to a business office can get expensive. Some personnel commit 50 % of their paychecks among fuel, meals along with other expenses.

Carefully pick things to put money into. Would you like to conserve around $100 month to month? It could be difficult, but ditch your daily trip to the coffee shop, and produce your own personal. Caffeine coming from a coffee shop might be expensive and you can make your own that likes just as good. Carry it along with you inside a thermos!

Utilize an income tax manager to upgrade your financial circumstances. Should your boss delivers any kind of expense opportunities that would use pre-taxes $ $ $ $, take advantage of them. Pre-taxes income needs to be allocated for just about any impending healthcare expenditures. Should your boss delivers 401k corresponding, ensure that you take full advantage of that probability. It can be perfectly great to apply your dollars that you just make the best way you are aware how.

Give rise to your IRA (Specific Retirement Accounts) when you are eligible to achieve this. This may go a long way to enhancing your long term fiscal overall health. All those curious can unlock IRAs having a brokerage service firm, common fund company, banking institution, or credit union. This may truly assist in supplementing your retirement living, by bringing about it on a regular basis.

Minimize a number of items. In case you are very careful, you can almost certainly help save about 100 dollars each month. You might like to remove a number of the very little luxuries you are employed to managing yourself to, for example drinking caffeine out instead of making it in the home. Expensive gourmet coffee beverages can set you back approximately 5 various dollars each and every, but homebrewed espresso can flavor wonderful when you outfit it up with a flavored creamer as well as a tiny whipped topping. Carry it with you inside a thermos!

Investments which have done nicely in he past might not be the correct choice for the current or future. Whenever you discover that cash you have invested is not dwelling approximately its potential, look for a far better destination to commit your hard earned money.

Give attention to charge cards with a higher curiosity if you want to eliminate your debt when you can. You really should pay all obligations evenly, but those that have a higher interest rate ought to be paid off initially to prevent accruing much more personal debt. This will likely only be more vital later on, when bank card rates rise.

Require an excellent truthful take a look at partnership with money. Should your aim is usually to boost your finances, you won?t have the capacity to do so till you have a better understanding of reasons why you devote and preserve how you will do. Possibly there is no need the right getting pregnant about funds and financial situation and want to reassess your main concerns. This will enable you to handle your fiscal long term far more effectively.

To acquire a better concept of what is going to afflict the market segments you purchase, monitor overseas information. Americans normally overlook markets outside the usa, but they are particularly worth noting if investing foreign currencies. Realizing international reports may help boost your technique for the industry.

You ought to have transformed the way you see your finances after reading this. Can we teach old dogs new tricks? Increasing giving through Wills ...

We?re delighted to have this guest post from Ross Anderson, Director on the Board of the Include a Charity campaign and Christopher Baker, a Research Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Social Investment and Philanthropy. There are few people in Australia better placed to talk about charitable giving via Wills.

We all know that there is significant demographic change underway in Australia.? The next decade will see Australia?s population exceed 25 million and age dramatically. It will also see members of the population boom that followed the end of World War II (Baby Boomers born between 1946-1964) firstly retiring and then ultimately passing away in increasingly large numbers.

Baby Boomers currently comprise 24% of our population, yet they own over 50% of our nation?s private wealth. By 2020, when most of those ?never-grow-old? Baby Boomers will be in their 60?s and 70?s, we will witness the start of the biggest inter-generational wealth transfer in our history.

No wonder charities are stepping-up their efforts to generate increased income from gifts in Wills. This is one of the most logical and obvious sustainable funding strategies that they could possibly adopt given these demographic predictions. But we must act together now to truly harness the powerful philanthropic effects of an increasing mortality rate and the intergenerational transfer of huge wealth that is anticipated to occur over the next 40 years.

What do we know about this form of philanthropy?

Not that much as it happens. We know that charitable giving through Wills in Australia is wildly out of kilter with levels of ?giving whilst living? via the support we give to charities whilst we?re alive.

The latest ATO figures show that 4.4 million Australian taxpayers (or 35.55% of the Australian taxpaying population) made tax-deductible donations totalling $1.96bn in 2009-10. Other studies estimate that almost 90% of us support charities in some shape or form.

So why is it that only 7% of us have been sufficiently inspired to include gifts to our favourite charities in our Wills?

A detailed study at Swinburne University of Technology of 1,700 Victorian wills has provided the statistical evidence for what you might have already expected to hear.?? The overwhelming majority of us leave all of our accumulated wealth to our immediate family members: first to our spouses, then to our children.? It doesn?t seem to matter how much wealth we?ve accumulated or whether or not we have contributed generously and passionately to charitable causes throughout our lives, when it comes to dividing up our estates ? charities essentially don?t get a look in.

The question this raises is whether or not f this role modelling by older Australians has ?doomed future generations to repeat this same pattern of estate-planning and overlook charitable giving? in their Wills too?

Let?s be clear, of course looking after our families comes first in most cases.? ?Adequately providing for those who are dependent on our financial support during our lifetimes is an important aspect of our estate-planning and decision-making. Our current family provision legislation and our ability to challenge the final wishes set out in our Wills ensures that the legal system makes this a reality.

There are however more significant levels of charitable giving through Wills in comparative countries:

In the UK, despite the fact that a very healthy looking 16% of British Wills that went into probate last year contained charitable gifts, the UK Government has introduced substantial financial incentives in an attempt to encourage further giving from personal estates to charitable causes (see www.legacy10.com? for more information).

In the US, the latest figures show that charitable giving through American Wills increased over 12% in the last year to a total of US$24.41 billion.

With our current levels of giving, Australia sits very low down on the league table of charitable giving from Wills.? We don?t believe this is something to be proud of.? We do see it however as a significant opportunity to improve.? The big question we face is ?What we can do to inspire more Australians to leave money to charitable causes in their Wills??

So, what can we do?

Many Australians will be shocked to learn that so few of us make any charitable provision what-so-ever in our Wills.? Given our self-perception as a generous nation, it is unlikely that most of us actually take a considered decision to specifically exclude charities; low participation rates are far more likely to come as a result of a general lack of awareness or falsely perceived barriers getting in the way.

Our current behaviour is unlikely to change without a collaborative and systematic approach to improving our attitude towards charitable giving through our Wills.? This is not an either / or decision. The challenge is not to try and get Australians to leave their entire estates to charities instead of their families.? The challenge is to get most of us to a point where we can consider leaving most of our estates to our families AND to include gifts as a small portion of our estates to our favourite charities.

The Include a Charity campaign (www.includeacharity.com.au) is a practical response to that very challenge. With some realistic, measurable and achievable goals in its attempts to bring about wide-scale social change, this is one of the only true cross-sector initiatives led by 140 Australian charities. With ambitious plans for further collaborative, collective joint impact initiatives, this is one social change campaign to watch.

The campaign has already delivered a wide range of targeted activities to introduce the idea of including charitable gifts in the nation?s Wills to a wider public audience. It is also seeking to increase the skills and sophistication of all in the sector in our efforts to encourage more Australians to take the step of including a charity when preparing their Wills.

We know that the challenge of tipping the very strong prevailing social norm in estate-planning away from thinking about ?family only? and towards thinking in terms of ?family first, philanthropy second? is large indeed.? It is important to the sector and to wellbeing of Australian society that we are able to make some significant inroads to change the current behaviour in estate-planning.

Arguably we have a window of opportunity to change Australian?s attitudes towards charitable gifts in their Wills of some 10 years.? If Baby Boomers start to include more charitable gifts in their Wills now, the sector will start to receive significantly increased income from this generation over the next 10-20 years.

We?d like to hear from you

The Include a Charity campaign is open to your suggestions and ideas.? We?d love to hear your reflections on what you think is needed to change our behaviour.

  • ?How can we work together to inspire older Australians to act philanthropically, supporting their favourite causes at the same time as making sure their families are provided for?
  • Are Australian children entitled to challenge their parents from ?spending the kids? inheritance??
  • Does the Government have a role to play in incentivising more charitable giving through Wills?

Assad has many generals to fight Syrian rebels

FILE - In this file photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA on July 19, 2012, Syrian President Bashar Assad, left, meets with Fahd Jassem al-Freij, Syria's new Defense Minister, in Damascus, Syria. Syrian President Bashar Assad?s regime received last week the worst blow since the country?s crisis began 17 months ago in what many thought would quickly bring the Assad family four-decade dynasty to an end but the government appears to have absorbed the shock of the explosion that killed four top security officials and it's on the offensive again. (AP Photo/SANA, File)

(AP) ? The Syrian regime appears to have absorbed the shock it suffered in the heaviest blow against it yet in Syria's 17-month-old upheaval ? a bombing that killed four top aides.

The blast raised opponents' hopes President Bashar Assad could fall soon. Instead he is back on the offensive and has reshuffled his inner circle of loyalists to brace for a long battle in what has become an outright civil war.

Although the president is embattled, he remains surrounded by loyal generals, many who are inextricably tied to the regime and have played a key role in the brutal crackdown against the opposition.

He has already made some progress on the ground. A counter-offensive by the government is gaining momentum and troops have so far been able to recapture neighborhoods in the capital Damascus that rebels overran earlier this month. The government also launched an offensive in the northern city of Aleppo, Syria's largest, where rebels have taken over several areas.

Regime forces have stepped up the use of force. Helicopter gunships have been used more than ever before in the battles with rebels in Damascus and Aleppo. Also this week, warplanes flew over Aleppo, although it was not possible to confirm claims by activists that the fighter jets actually fired on rebels ? which would be a first since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011.

A Syrian who fled to Lebanon this week said the regime forces' attacks have intensified.

"Whenever they suspect there is an area where there are (rebel) gunmen, they destroy it," said the man who identified himself as Fawaz and said he had come from the southern province of Daraa, where the uprising began.

Still, the past weeks have shown that the rebels ? a mix of army defectors and regime opponents who have taken up arms ? are getting more experienced and sophisticated. That points to Syria's conflict, which anti-regime activists say has already left 19,000 dead, getting even bloodier as both sides try to finish the other by force.

"Syria will get much worse before it gets any better. Assad might fall but he will do his darndest to leave behind a burned down country," said Bilal Saab, a Syria expert at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. "There will be tactical advances and retreats by both, but time and momentum seems to be on the rebels' side."

Assad has suffered a series of setbacks over the past weeks. On July 18, rebels detonated a bomb inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus that killed the defense minister, the head of the National Security Bureau, Assad's brother-in-law and a former defense minister ? some of Assad's most trusted officers.

At the same time, the rebel Free Syrian Army was waging its most brazen offensive yet in Damascus, taking over several neighborhoods and sparking the heaviest and most sustained battles in the capital. They also rose up in Aleppo, which throughout the conflict has been a pillar of support for Assad's regime and has seen little opposition activity. The rebels took at least four border points with Turkey and Iraq.

Moreover, one of his confidants and longtime friends, Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass, defected and said Thursday he will work to unite the opposition against the regime. Several diplomats also defected, including the ambassador to Iraq and the former envoy to the United Arab Emirates.

But the regime is bouncing back. It took several days, but troops took back control in Damascus. Regime forces have been battling rebels in Aleppo for days.

On the day of the bombing, the regime made clear it would strike back hard. Information Minister Omran al-Zoebi appeared on state TV and warned that the state had not even begun to use its full firepower yet, adding that "92 percent of our forces are still in their barracks."

Despite the losses from the bombing, the president is still surrounded by loyal generals who will continue the crackdown. His innermost circle is made up of the heads of the four powerful intelligence agencies, which keep a pervasive hold on the country, and his younger brother, Maher, who commands the elite 4th Division as well as the Republican Guards in charge of protecting the capital.

On Tuesday, Assad carried out a reshuffle that further tightened his core of loyalists.

In the most significant move, he activated the national security council, a body officially created two years ago but dormant since. The council's role is to coordinate between the four intelligence agencies and compile information from them, presumably to make them more cohesive in fighting the rebellion.

To head the council, Assad promoted the chief of his general intelligence directorate, Maj. Gen. Ali Mamlouk. Already one of the regime's most important figures, Mamlouk's new role gives him even more influence.

Notably, he is a Sunni, one of the few in the top leadership dominated by members of Assad's minority Alawite sect. Sunnis have formed the backbone of the uprising against Assad and a number of Sunni army generals have defected to the rebellion. But the promotion signals Assad's deep trust of Mamlouk, whose longtime insider status and role in fighting the opposition the past 17 months inextricably tie him to the regime.

The head of military intelligence, Maj. Gen. Abdel-Fattah Qudsiyeh, was made the security council's deputy head. A senior military intelligence general was elevated to take his place.

The head of another of the four intelligence agencies, the Political Security Department ? Maj. Gen. Deeb Zeitoun, also a Sunni ? was moved over to lead the General Intelligence Directorate, replacing Mamlouk.

To fill in Zeitoun's now empty position, Assad brought in loyalist Maj. Gen. Rostom Ghazali from his job as security chief for the Damascus suburbs, which has been a battleground with rebels for months. Previously, as Syria's intelligence chief in Lebanon, Ghazali was a key enforcer of Syria's then-direct domination over its smaller neighbor, which lasted for 29 years until 2005.

The head of the fourth intelligence agency, air force intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Jamil Hassan, apparently remained in his post.

Hilal Khashan, a political science professor at the American University of Beirut, said the reshuffle is "part of the regime's build-up."

"Either Syria with himself as a leader or no Syria: He is going to the end in this direction," Khashan said. "Those around Assad today are those who linked their fate to him. They either go up or down with him."

Critically injured Colorado shooting victim suffers miscarriage

DENVER (Reuters) - The critically injured mother of the six-year-old girl killed in the Denver-area movie theater shooting rampage has suffered a miscarriage as a result of her injuries, her family said on Saturday.

Ashley Moser, 25, who was shot in the neck and abdomen during the July 20 midnight premier of "The Dark Knight Rises," underwent additional surgery for her injuries on Saturday morning, Moser's family said in a statement.

"Tragically, the extreme trauma she sustained also caused a miscarriage," the statement said. "Her lifetime of care will be a long road."

Moser's daughter, Veronica Moser-Sullivan, was the youngest to die in the shooting spree, which killed 12 people and wounded 58 others.

"Ashley is suffering a deep tragedy in the loss of her daughter and needs significant time to heal," the family said in an earlier statement.

The man suspected of carrying out the massacre in Aurora, 24-year-old James Holmes, is being held in solitary confinement and without bond in the Arapahoe County jail.

Holmes will appear in court on Monday, when prosecutors are expected to formally charge the former University of Colorado neuroscience graduate student with multiple charges of first degree murder.

A 3-Step Process to Finding Public Speaking Gigs to Build Your ...

Author: Christine Gallagher | Total views: 118 Comments: 0
Word Count: 773 Date:

While I'm known for coaching entrepreneurs on how to grow a business online, I'm also fond of telling my clients and students to get out from behind the computer once in a while too!

Yes, technology can be fantastic, but it's vitally important to connect with people face to face as well. Public speaking is a powerful way to accomplish this, and is something I did a good amount of early on in my business especially. Because of its many benefits, I continue to seek out these opportunities today, and one of the biggest questions I receive around this is about HOW to find these speaking engagements.

I consider it to be a simple 3-step process, and just by following these steps, you'll be well on your way to an abundance of gigs.

1. Start Looking!

One big piece of advice: if you are new to speaking and/or business, don't be too picky in the beginning. I often see people rule out lots of opportunities because they believe they won't be able to reach their exact ideal client by speaking to that particular group. To begin gaining momentum, you HAVE to let this go. You never know who you will meet or connect with or what opportunities will come just from you getting OUT there in some shape or form.

I've spoken for many seemingly "random" groups and associations in my career, and have always been amazed at what comes out of it--additional ideal speaking gigs, clients, sales, word of mouth, media attention--so keep an open mind here. Some places to begin: your local Small Business Administration offices or Development Centers, local civic groups such as the Rotary, local organizations' annual conferences, the local Chamber of Commerce, local trade organizations, national conferences, even the local library (that's where I got started!)

2. Create Your Speaker Sheet

This is what you will share with those who have booked you to speak, and sometimes, with those who are still considering it. In its simplest form, this sheet usually has your contact information, photo, the title of your talk, and some bullets about what the audience will learn from you.

Additionally, some speakers choose to include information about books or publications they've been featured in, as well as testimonials or a listing of clients they've worked with.

3. Reach Out and Ask

Last, search Google or the association or group's website for a contact person to call or email and inquire. It's important at this point to simply only ask if they accept outside speakers, nothing more. Here's an example of what I have sent in the past:

"Hello. I'm an online marketing and social media expert and speaker, specializing in topics for women entrepreneurs. Do you accept outside speakers? My signature talk is called 'The 6 Simple Steps to Kick Start Your Social Media Success.' If so, please let me know?"

This opens up the conversation, but first you need to know if you've even got a shot. Don't be discouraged at the "No's"--keep asking, and make it a habit to reach out to new possible speaking leads consistently every month.

Also, don't forget to "work" your connections! Many times my own speaking gigs came about because I reached out to people I knew were part of certain organizations. They were already acquaintances or colleagues of mine, and I simply let them know of my interest in presenting for their group.

Finally, there is definitely something to be said for being highly visible online. By regularly participating in social media, keeping your blog updated, sending a newsletter and posting content such as articles on the web, you increase the chances of others not only seeing you as an expert, but of reaching out to connect you to speaking gigs. In fact, I've secured several local speaking engagements in the past just by consistently showing up on sites like Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, engaging with others there, and sharing information of value.

The best part of simply getting started seeking out public speaking engagements is the snowball effect. While you'll be doing much of the pursuing in the beginning, once you start to get out there, you'll begin getting approached with other speaking opportunities. This was certainly my experience as well, and after a while, you can decide to be a bit choosier.

The bottom line? More speaking means more clients, more customers, and more sales? so what are you waiting for?

(AP) ? "I think my country Sudan has really hit rock bottom." Those were the last public words uttered by Usamah Mohamad, a 32-year-old Sudanese web developer-turned-citizen journalist, in a video announcing he would join protests against President Omar al-Bashir.

Mohamad, popular under his Twitter handle "simsimt," was arrested the same day his video was aired. For the next month, his family had no idea where he was. Finally they learned he was in Khartoum's high security prison and were allowed to visit him last week.

He was skinnier and darker, a sign he had been left to bake in the scorching Khartoum sun, people close to his case say. The family itself is saying nothing.

Mohamad and hundreds of others ? no less than 2,000, activists say ? have been detained the past month in a campaign unleashed by the Sudanese government. The crackdown aims to crush a new attempt to launch a protest movement calling for the ouster of al-Bashir, inspired by the Middle East's uprisings that toppled the leaders of Sudan's neighbors Egypt and Libya as well as Tunisia and Yemen.

Anti-government activists see al-Bashir's 23-year-old regime as the ripest in the region to fall. He has been weakened by the loss of oil-rich South Sudan, which became independent last year after two decades of Africa's bloodiest civil war. His regime has had to impose painful economic austerity measures to make up for the loss of revenues from the south's oil, sending inflation up to nearly 40 percent this month. The years-old rebellion in the western Darfur region continues to bleed the country. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in that region.

"We have more reasons than any other Arab country for an uprising," said Siddique Tawer, of an opposition umbrella group. "No other country was split. Sudan was. No other country has a civil war ongoing in Darfur and (fighting along the border with the South)."

"These are enough reasons to topple a regime, aside from the corruption, oppression and the rising cost of living," he said. "The continuation of this regime is dangerous for the rest of the Sudan."

But those troubles could also prolong the life of al-Bashir's regime. Al-Bashir has showed a survivor's talent for using external threats to keep key parts of the public behind him. He is backed by a brutal security machine and a network of interests built on Islamist ideology, economic ties and tribal politics.

At an inauguration of a factory in central Sudan on July 11, al-Bashir ridiculed prospects for an uprising.

"They talk of an Arab Spring. Let me tell them that in Sudan we have a hot summer, a burning hot summer that burns its enemies," al-Bashir said, waving his cane threateningly.

So far, his prediction has borne true. Some activists fled the country, others are lying low amid the crackdown after protests by thousands raged for more than a week in June, the biggest since the Arab Spring began in late 2010. Under censorship, newspapers are not reporting on the protests.

Under a blanket of fear instilled by security agencies, several activists spoke to The Associated Press on condition anonymity to avoid detention or refused to talk at all.

"I think a popular uprising to topple the regime is not an attractive option to the Sudanese right now," said Hassan Haj Ali, a Khartoum University political science professor.

Many are wary of new turmoil after the long civil war and are bracing for a worsening economy. Sudanese also remember how unrest against al-Bashir's predecessors led to military coups, bringing Sudanese "back to square one," he said.

Sudanese and the region worry of further fragmentation, with separatist movements not only in Darfur but also in the east and in the south.

"What remains of Sudan may not hold as one bloc and may become so unstable it reflects on neighboring countries," including South Sudan, said Haj Ali. As a result, regional powers ? and the United States, he said ? may prefer "to deal with the regime in its current condition and not be embroiled in further crises."

Khartoum came close to war with South Sudan early this year. With the two sides in torturous negotiations over oil sharing and borders, al-Bashir's regime can drum up public support with anti-South rhetoric.

Sudan's crushing economic crisis has given youth groups a tool to galvanize the public behind their protest movement.

After years of a boom fueled by southern oil, Sudan has reeled since the south's independence. The crisis is threatening to worsen under austerity measures recommended by the International Monetary Fund to deal with shrinking resources.

Inflation is expected to rise further, electricity bills are going up, and consumer groups are urging a boycott of meat and poultry because of rocketing prices. The currency lost nearly half its value the past year, reaching 4.4 pounds to the dollar officially and six on the black market, according to media reports.

The youth groups, some of them working since 2009, put together a movement through social media and university activism, linking with disgruntled communities of Darfuris and others who live in Khartoum.

On June 16, protests erupted. Female students marched in Khartoum University, were joined by male students, and together they moved into the streets of the capital. Over the next six days, protests broke out at universities in Khartoum and other cities. On the Friday of that week, the strongest day of protests, regular citizens in Khartoum joined, coming out from mosques in marches that numbered several thousand.

"The people demand the downfall of the regime," some chanted, a refrain heard in other Arab uprisings.

Throughout the week, police struck back with tear gas and rubber bullets and ? in at least one case ? live ammunition, according to the London-based Sudanese rights group the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies. Several students were seriously injured. Student militias helped security agents in seizing protesters, according to ACJPS. Finally, Khartoum University's vacation was moved up to prevent more protests.

The movement planned nationwide protests on June 30, coinciding with regime celebrations for the anniversary of al-Bashir's coming to power. Under a security clampdown, protesters managed only a small turnout. But with so many troops in the streets, anniversary parades were not held.

Mohamad, the web developer, was seized at the Friday protest as he tweeted about arrests by agents of the notorious National Security Services in Khartoum's Burri district.

But friends say he may have been targeted because of his video aired the same day on Al-Jazeera English TV. "After 23 years of oppression and injustice, poverty and crime that are all committed under the current regime, change now is an inevitable must," he said in the video.

His detention without charge, while others have been freed, shows how the regime sees information about the protests as the biggest threat, said a friend of Mohammed who was held twice in custody, including once for 11 hours without water.

"He is detained for a month, a treatment reserved usually for a ringleader," the friend said.

Activists report arbitrary arrests of protesters and bloggers and their families in the middle of the night, beatings and humiliation in detention. Two Egyptian female journalists reporting for foreign media amid the unrest were deported.

Some detainees were forced to call fellow activists to arrange meetings that were really sting operations to arrest them. Interrogators threatened to release pictures of women activists wearing revealing clothes to scandalize them in Sudan's conservative society.

One student told ACJPS that an officer threatened to snap his neck while another scraped off his eyebrows, moustache and hair with a blade. "Now we've marked you and if we catch you again protesting we will cut other parts of your body," they told him.

Two activists face serious criminal charges including inciting violence against the regime. One of them, Rudwan Dawoud, who is married to an American and holds U.S. residency, was labeled a spy and could face the death sentence.

Nagui Moussa ? a 26-year old activist from the protest group Girifna, or "We are fed up" ? left to Cairo after being detained twice, deciding he was of more use outside spreading information about the protests.

He says protests may have waned ? because of both the crackdown and the fasting month of Ramadan ? but "people have changed. Why? Because they are seeing the continuous lies of the regime."

Protests in Khartoum make those in the core of Sudan realize that "the injustice is all over, in the center as in the periphery."

"People will see that the one who strikes and tortures in the south, or in Darfur, is the same as the one who strikes and tortures in the north," he said.

Netflix chosen by many, but liked by few, says study

2 hrs.

Despite being used by more than 80 percent of the respondents in a new Consumer Reports survey, Netflix video streaming service?doesn't seem to be very well-liked. Users mainly criticized its poor selection and did not see it as a viable option for replacing cable TV and movie rentals.

Over 15,000 people were surveyed by Consumer Reports for the study, and while it doesn't really bear out any new information, it does indicate that people understand the shortcomings of these services.

With Netflix, predictably, it's the selection. Who hasn't tried to find something to watch some night, only to spend it scrolling through endless early-2000s movies and obscure documentaries? One respondent noted that the latest movie he could find with George Clooney in it was 10 years old. Even for $8 a month, that's pretty shabby.

The larger take-away is that there still just?isn't a valid replacement for cable TV and movie rentals. You can go cheap with Netflix or Hulu Plus, but those are far from an all-access pass. You can pay per episode with Vudu or iTunes, but you may end up spending $30 just to watch a single season of a single show.?And independent movie rental places have a great selection and helpful staff, but no one wants to bet they'll be around in a couple years.

For now it seems people are satisfied to pay their money and get their cable, and then switch on the Roku or Apple TV when there's nothing good on. But given the amount of dissatisfaction with any given?part of this arrangement, be it cost, selection or convenience, the next few years may see more people than ever trying to cut the cord. Meanwhile, Netflix will take the abuse and somehow still maintain a stranglehold on its subscribers. Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome.

What Do I Want to Do For A Living? | QuickieChick

My mentor once told me that the most successful people have no more than 3 careers in their life. In other words, they may have many jobs that step them up the ladder of their career, but they take no more than 3 paths. What this means is that you have to figure out what you want to do before you go out and start doing something. Define your end goal, then figure out the steps to get there.

What if you have no idea what you want to do?
It?s time to sit down and start writing. Without any particular career in mind, make a list of Personal Attributes (strengths and weaknesses) and Career Needs.

For example:
PERSONAL STRENGTHS

PERSONAL STRENGTHS

Chatty, and amicable in a group/ work environment

Snaps into focused mode easily

Likes to have things mixed up incl. settings, people?

Likes to be in the action/ thick of things

Prefers to write and research independently

Enjoys writing and proof reading

Likes statistics, graphs and memorizing and using them

Likes to research

Can organize for other people

Manages time well under deadlines and in office setting

Empathetic

Sincere in wanting to help others

Enjoys bouncing ideas off of others in group setting

In group settings, ensures efficiency and quick results

Performs tasks quickly

Meets deadlines

Enjoys entertaining, (idea of) going to business functions and receptions

Willing to work on weekends and into late evenings

PERSONAL WEAKNESSES

Energetic personality might irk people

Needs space away from others to get focused on work

Gets nervous when presenting in front of groups (it?s not too bad)

Doesn?t manage own time well

Keeps personal space messy

Not always succinct in writing and speaking

Writes slowly

Needs structure of office environment to reach potential

Lacks confidence to go at new projects w/o support

Can get impatient in group setting when time is wasted or progress isn?t made

Doesn?t appreciate bureaucracy

CAREER NEEDS

Does not want to work in a catty office, but rather in a professional office

Opportunities to change locations in case? (who knows!)

Would like to live in a city

To sleep 7/8 hours most nights

Flexibility (eventually) to be able to work at office, home or anywhere else

Paycheck large enough to maintain some aspects of current quality of life- dinners, concerts every so often, plane tix

Opportunities to advance within organization

Now look at your list and from that, think about what your job might look like, what you might be good at, what you would like to do, and what you would prefer not to do.

Warner Bros. postpones "Gangster Squad" movie after shooting

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Warner Bros. movie studio postponed until early next year the release of "Gangster Squad," a crime drama featuring a scene with a movie theater shooting that prompted concern following last Friday's fatal attack in Colorado.

The film, a mob thriller set in Los Angeles during the 1940s and '50s, starring Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling, will reach theaters on January 11, 2013, rather than its originally scheduled September 7 debut, a Warner Bros. spokeswoman said on Thursday.

The studio is considering whether to edit or delete the scene in which mobsters burst through a movie screen while opening fire on a theater audience, a person familiar with the studio's plans told Reuters.

The Warner Bros. spokeswoman declined to comment on whether the movie will be changed.

The studio acted after a lone gunman shot and killed 12 people on July 20 during a midnight showing of Batman movie "The Dark Knight Rises," another Warner Bros. release.

Just after the incident, Warner Bros. pulled "Gangster Squad" promotional trailers that featured the shooting scene and were running ahead of "Dark Knight Rises" in some theaters.

Warner Bros. is owned by Time Warner Inc.

Syria could see prolonged endgame, ensuing chaos

LONDON (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's days may be numbered but his fall could be slow and chaos could ensue.

Few analysts, foreign governments or intelligence agencies believe Assad himself faces any fate other than negotiated flight or death at the hands of his own people. But for Western officials, the challenge has become much more complex than forcing Assad out or pushing Russia to abandon him.

One senior Western government source said the most likely outcome might be protracted conflict such as that in 1980s Lebanon, dragging in foreign powers and lasting well over a decade.

Ultimately, much depends on Assad himself. But for all the efforts of Western intelligence services to build up a psychological profile, they say the actions of the British-trained ophthalmologist remain difficult to predict.

"In general terms, I don't think he is too hard to read: just another hood, albeit at the more sophisticated end of the spectrum... but gauging how he would respond to a particular conjunction of circumstances is all but impossible," says Nigel Inkster, a former deputy chief of Britain's Secret Intelligence Service MI6.

Foreign powers doubt Syria's troubles would end with Assad's removal. His Alawite minority might well fight on, if only to try to protect itself against the ethnic backlash that could follow his fall. The wider state - including the mainstream army left largely unused in favor of elite Alawite units - could collapse.

"We may see Balkanisation," says Anthony Skinner, head of the Middle East practice at UK-based consultancy Maplecroft. "Kurds in the north, Druze in the southern hills, Alawites in the coastal northwestern mountainous region and the Sunni majority elsewhere."

While Western officials quietly bemoan their lack of options, the choices available to the Syrian leadership are eroding even faster.

Some still believe Assad may want to put his family's safety first and broker some kind of escape. But there has been little sign of such appetite, suggesting the Syrian leader may have ruled that out.

"At this point, he's likely to fight... and may not even have any alternatives," said Ari Ratner, a former Obama administration State Department Middle East adviser and now a fellow at the Truman National Security Foundation.

"If he would have abdicated early in the crisis... perhaps he could have found safe harbor somewhere internationally as part of a negotiated settlement. But now he has so much blood on his hands... that would be nearly impossible."

REGIONAL SHOCKWAVES

While Damascus has been using attack helicopters against the rebels, it has held back from using fixed wing aircraft, perhaps wary of provoking the kind of internationally backed no-fly zone that led to foreign intervention in Libya.

There is a risk that in the dying days of his rule, Assad might unleash chemical weapons, feeling he has nothing further to lose. Potential targets could include states such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia that backed the rebels as well as Israel. Foreign intelligence agencies have also worried he might transfer chemical weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon, giving them the capability to threaten Israel.

"The chemical weapons add another level of complexity to an already volatile situation," said Mona Yacoubian, a former State Department official and now a Middle East specialist at the Stimson Center in Washington DC.

"It is possible that feeling cornered... the Syrian government could act rashly - whether with chemical weapons or another tactic. However, it is also clear that this would be suicidal."

While Assad may fear intervention as seen in Libya or Iraq, foreign powers remain reluctant to take such a course. Sources with knowledge of the matter say some planning is underway, however, and some experts believe the possibility is growing.

Foreign support to the rebel Free Syrian Army - primarily arms, support and training from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey - is ramping up. But few analysts see such support as a game changer.

Western states remain largely on the sidelines, providing some intelligence and "non lethal" aid. Officials frequently bemoan the chaotic nature of the opposition and its limited capability to take on Assad.

With Assad backed by Shi'ite Iran and the majority Sunni opposition backed by predominantly Sunni-led Gulf monarchies, Syria is already exacerbating regional ethnic tensions.

"I fear Syria is sliding into a protected, sectarian civil war with the potential to wreak havoc across the region," says Stimpson Center's Yacoubian. "I do not think a negotiated solution or some type of managed transition is possible any longer."

Forced to think about families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky

An Internet avalanche of wrath uncovers a sexual predator and enlightens a blogger about remembering the "other" victims ? the families of Holmes, Paterno, and Sandusky.

By Lisa Suhay,?Correspondent / July 25, 2012

Dorothy Sandusky, wife of former Penn State University assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky, center, arrives at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pa., on June 19, 2012. Jerry Sandusky was charged with 51 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys over a period of 15 years.

After the news of both the NCAA decision on the Penn State pedophile and Colorado massacre hit in the same week, we were so upset that most folks didn't really waste time wondering what the families of the bad guys must be feeling. Because so much compassion is expended for the dead and wounded, there isn?t much feeling left for the families of those who committed the evil act itself.

My July 23 Modern Parenthood blog on the NCAA ruling prompted a left-field response that blew my mind and prompts me to think more about the families of criminals.

In the blog, I lashed out at those at Penn State who knew about former coach Jerry Sandusky's acts as a pedophile and sex offender. And instantly, I was targeted by members of a Missouri community who linked a sex offender there with a donor to my children's chess charity. Suddenly my chess blog and YouTube videos ? part of the nonprofit organization Norfolk Initiative for Chess Excellence (NICE) ? were slammed with outraged comments revealing that a donor to the nonprofit is a sex offender.

It was all news to me.

My best guess on how this connection was made is that people who were aware of the man?s convictions tended to look for stories slamming pedophiles and sex offenders, and it wasn?t a big leap from my Monitor blog to my chess blog and videos, which are prominently featured in the donor?s home state of Missouri where he sold brightly colored and patterned chess boards for children.

While most people might not think of chess as a child's playground, more than half of the 45 million Americans who play chess are children playing in schools and community centers. The Glos company, which donated the chessboards to my organization, was trying to strike deals with major school systems as well as the Boy Scouts which created a chess merit badge last August. So this is a very big deal to this little company.

I have never met James C. Walker in person, nor his wife Laura. It is she who owns and operates Glos Games, while he designed boards and did marketing and sales. I am told he no longer has any contact with the company.

After a series of phone calls a year ago, Laura and I became friends. Jimmy and his larger-than-life persona over the phone irritated me so badly that I just stopped dealing with him, except on rare occasions when Laura wasn't available.

International Sweeteners Association: Experts Underline Important ...

The International Sweeteners Association (ISA) draws attention to a growing number of experts supporting the message that low calorie sweeteners play an important role for healthy, active people. Used in more than 6,000 products around the world, low calorie sweeteners can significantly reduce the energy density of foods and beverages when used as a substitute for sugar.
Speaking in Glasgow last week at the official London 2012 Olympics global scientific meeting, the International Convention on Science, Education and Medicine in Sport (ISCEMIS), nutrition expert Penny Hunking said: ?The value of regular exercise to help people manage their weight is well recognised. The mantra `eat less, do more? holds true but strategies to practically achieve this can be challenging, as exercising can physically and mentally stimulate overall appetite and lead to overeating. Physically active individuals need to be mindful of the caloric density of foods and drinks they choose; consuming many more calories than one burns, would defeat the purpose of exercise. Low calorie sweeteners do not enhance the appetite and are a smart, positive alternative to high calorie sugar sweetened products, benefiting weight management by lowering overall energy intake.?

Hunking?s views follow a recent statement published by the journals of the American Heart Association (AHA) and American Diabetes Association (ADA), published earlier this month. The statement highlights that the smart use of non-nutritive (low calorie) sweeteners as a substitute for sugars in food and beverages could help people reach and maintain a healthy body weight [1].

Also at ICSEMIS, biopsychologist Professor Marion Hetherington made an interesting point about environmental factors as a prompt for exercise and healthy eating. She said, ?Healthy food and drink cues help consumers to make healthier decisions, such as eating better foods and exercising more.?

Low calorie sweeteners can form an important part of those healthier decisions, especially as there is a need for physically active people to hydrate more often. Sports scientist Professor John Brewer highlighted this in his presentation. He said, ?Even top athletes need to take more care of their hydration needs before, during and after exercise. Hydration with zero or fewer calories can be achieved with the help of low calorie sweeteners and flavoured drinks in particular offer a taste motivation thereby promoting effective hydration.?

Do not hesitate to ask for evidence of the impact that a consulting firm has had when working with other clients. Some consulting firms will over-promise to their clients, so it is important that you get a sense from the firm of what you can realistically expect. This will not only help you settle on the right firm for you, but will help prepare you to move forward.

Personal Attention

Your business is vitally important to you, so you need to work with others who demonstrate a similar level of passion. It is fair to expect a certain level of commitment and attention from any consulting firm with which you choose to work.

Personal attention can be as simple as remembering details, or going above and beyond in small ways. These are the types of things that demonstrate that a business consulting firm is seriously interested in working with you over the long term.

With some focus, hiring an outside business consulting firm to work with your small business can be one of the best decisions you make. Explore your options and learn more about how you can grow your business by partnering with a well qualified professional business consulting firm.
