Benjamin Ginsberg is not only a behind-the-scenes power in Republican politics, he?s a connector.
As the New York Times reports today, Ginsberg, a longtime legal adviser to GOP campaigns and committees, is counsel to both the Romney campaign and to multimillionaire J. Joe Ricketts.
Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, was thrust into the spotlight this month with the Times revelations of a proposal to attack President Obama for his ties to the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.
The Times now reports that Ricketts is also an investor in a film based on ?The Roots of Obama?s Rage,? a book theorizing that Obama inherited an ?anti-colonial? ideology from his Kenyan father.
Although Ricketts is a contributor, he has no direct connection to Romney?s campaign. Ginsberg, however, is a shared source of advice.
As the Times wrote about the lawyer-turned attorney earlier this year: ?Every candidate needs a lawyer he trusts, and Mr. Ginsberg that for Mr. Romney. He negotiated debate appearances and will likely shepherd the highly secret vice presidential vetting process when that time comes. An expert in campaign law, like Mr. Obama?s first chief counsel, Bob Bauer, Mr. Ginsberg is highly cautious but maintains careful relationships with players in Washington.?
