Though accurate decisions have never been made on whether fertility drugs taken by women raise their risk of developing breast cancer or help them reducing the same. A team of researchers from the National Institutes of Health has been claiming it has reached a conclusion.
As per the findings of the report, the group says that the drugs however, initially reduce young women's risk of getting the disease. But, it increases after they become pregnant.
Published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute the present day, the study funded by Susan G. Komen had been conducted with an enrolment of almost 1,600 pairs of sisters. While more than 1400 amidst them were those with a diagnosis of the illness before 50 years of age, the other group was of their 1,600 sisters who had never developed the cancer.
It was then found that from the 288 women, who had taken fertility drugs like clomiphene citrate or follicle-stimulating hormone, those who did not get pregnant had lower risks of developing the disease. Also, those whose pregnancy lasted for 10 weeks or a bit more were at raised risks.
"I don't see the results as any cause for alarm. But everyone needs to manage their risk and be careful", said Clarice Weinberg, an author.
